Bridger (1804-1881), a native of Virginia, was "one of the three or four most able, influential, and best known mountain men . accompanying Ashley on his expeditions in the 1820s . one of the organizers of the Rocky Mountain Fur Company in 1830 . [in the late 1830s] with Louis Vasquez [building] Fort Bridger [which] became a principal trading post for emigrants, a military center, and a pony express station . one of the greatest frontiersmen of the American saga" (Encyclopedia of Frontier Biography). He was the first white man, so far as is known to visit (fall of 1824) Great Salt Lake.he established a way-station, Fort Bridger, on the Oregon Trail in southwestern Wyoming in 1843."
