Item Description: Methuen & Co. Ltd, London, first edition, 1957, 1957. Cloth, 8vo, 23 cm, xi, 170 pp [2] pp ads, ills, map, plates. From the introduction: "All paper historians, from Richard Herring {Paper and Paper Making 1855) to Mr Dard Hunter (Paper Making, 2nd ed. 1947) have noted the pre-eminence of a James Whatman in the great revival of English paper making in the eighteenth century, but none of them has been able to give more than a few facts or figures to substantiate this claim, and most of them were unaware that there were two James Whatmans, father and son. As late as 1938 the first outline of the son's career appeared.but there was still no more to be said of the father than 'of his activities nothing is known'. Now, however, it can be definitely stated that James Whatman I, though still elusive as a human being, established one of the greatest, if not the greatest, paper factories in the United Kingdom, and was also the first maker, and probably the inventor, of 'wove', the kind of paper which is now in almost universal use. Further research has also led to very full biographical details of the son, and to much information about his activities in his trade." Contents include: Introduction; I The Whatman Pedigree; II Turkey Mill; III Richard Harris; IV James Whatman I; V James Whatman II; VI Turkey Mill 1763-68; Vii Turkey Mill 1768-74; VIII Turkey Mill and Loose Mill 1775-79; IX Domestic Life 1771-82; X The Mill Ledger 1780-87; XI Poll Mill; XII The Excise Duties; XIII Work at The Mills 1788-94; XIV The Sale of The Mills; XV Hollingbourne Mill; XVI Last Years; XVII Aftermath; Appendices: I Did Whatman Learn his Craft in Holland?; II The Trial of Edward Burch and Matthew Martin. Head of spine faded, otherwise near Very Good in a used and darkened dustwrapper. Bookseller Inventory # ABE-43412
