Biography of one of the leading South African statesmen of his time (1845-1909). Onze Jan was a noted journalist, Parliamentarian and an ally of Cecil John Rhodes. As head of the Afrikaner Bond, an organization dedicated to securing the political supremacy of the Cape Dutch. his influence was enormous. The co-authors are: 1. The subject's namesake nephew, who was first principal of the University of Johannesburg and Deputy Prime Minister in the Government of Jan Smuts. 2. F W Reitz, Chief Justice of the Cape Colony, fifth State President of the Orange Free State, State Secretary of the South African Republic at the time of the Second Anglo-Boer War, and first president of the Senate of the Union of South Africa.
