About this Item: Grosset and Dunlap, New York, 1899. Decorated Hard Boards. Condition: Good. No Jacket. First Edition. Subtitle; a Story of the American Revolution; 536 pgs, endpapers browning, corners bumped, signatures frontis, back cover starting to loosen otherwise pages tight. Considered good for its 108 years ! This novel proved to be Ford's greatest literary success. Although the critics attacked the novel's faulty construction, lack of style, and contrived action, the reading public adored it. This historical romance, set before and during the time of the Revolutionary War, narrates the struggle of the colonies to gain their freedom and the struggle of the hero, Jack Brereton, to win the heroine, Janice Meredith. One enthusiastic critic went so far as to declare that this novel was "the great New Jersey novel, if not the great American novel." For the public's part, a new dance was coined the "Janice Meredith Waltz," and a new hairstyle was labeled the "Meredith curl." All in all, most critics agreed that Janice Meredith was proof of Ford's improved skill as a novelist. This is the popual edition. Seller Inventory # 000674

About this Item: Dodd, Mead & Company, New York, 1899. Hardcover. Condition: Very Good+. Illustrated by Howard Pyle & students (illustrator). Limited Edition; 1st Printing. B&W Illustrations; Two Volume Set. Limited Edition. Both volumes are in Very Good+ condition and possibly issued without dust jackets. Volume two is in slightly better condition. Together, The books and their contents are in clean, bright condition. The spine of both volumes have some sunning / fading, while volume one has several small edge tears to the top spine end. The text pages are clean and bright. The text is uncut and untrimmed. There is an inked former owner's name and date (1899) on the front endpaper of volume one and again on the half title page of volume two. Volume one includes a Miniature of Janice Meredith by Lillie V. O'Ryan while volume two includes a miniature of George Washington by Sharpless. The text of both volumes is illustrated with 172 plates - most of which are by the students of Howard Pyle. This copy is missing three plates (pgs 186, 188 & 192 - however they do not appear to have been excised, but conversely, left out during the binding process). The majority of the plates appear to be by his students, especially some of his more favored female artists, including Ellen Bernard Thompson and Anna Whelan Betts. It is possible that Howard Pyle is responsible for up to 58 of the illustrations (according to Howard Pyle: Imagining An American School of Art by Jill May, etc.). This volume sold very well as an illustrated holiday edition, in fact it was listed as the best selling book in February 1900. Seller Inventory # 26387
