About this Item: Hokuseido Press, The, Tolyo Central Ginza, 1936. Hard Cover. Condition: Good+. Author was a Visiting Lecturer on Japanese Affairs at Columbia University from 1931 to 1934. This book was conceived and written during those years, and is the author's attempt to "summarize in English and in one handy volume the main acts and scenes in the unfolding drama of Japans foreign relations during the past four hundred years, from her first contact with Western Powers through the recent Sino-Japanese crisis." Red cloth with gilt titling on spine, gilt illustration on front, blind-stamped insignia on back, top text block edge is gilt, a page of Japanese characters (title?) precedes the black and white frontispiece with tissue-guard, illustrated with occasional black and white photographs, 560 pages. On the last page is laid in a sticker in English and Japanese with title, etc and the price. Tucked into book is a presentation card that reads "With the Compliments of C. Nagakura, The South Manchuria Railway Company, New York" as well as a small black and white bio of the author. Spine is slightly sunned, there is a pale smudge on lower text block edge, text block edges slightly darkened, two ink stamps on end paper that read: "Harvard-Yenching Library, Cambridge, Massachusetts" and "No Longer Property of Harvard-Yenching Library." This is a handsome volume - clean, bright and tight and appears to be unread. Shipping charges are calculated for a standard parcel under 1 kg. Additional charges will apply for heavier shipments, but not until the customer agrees. Canadian customers, please note that applicable sales taxes will be added. Please contact us with any questions you might have. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Seller Inventory # 014657
