[Well Illustrated View of late 19th Century Japan - Volume/Section 3 of 10 Volume Set]. Boston and Tokyo, J.B. Millet Company, 1897, Section III, 22 illustrations (including 3 hand colored albumen pictures, 1 color collotype by K. Ogawa of flowers and 18 in text black and white pictures), a total 38 text pages (pp 75-112). This version is not given an edition name nor are quantity printed stated. This is Section 3 of a set that comes in 10 separate sections (volumes) which are Folio size (Page Size - 12 x 15 3/4 in - Cover Size - 12 1/2 x 16 in) with elaborately decorated (floral design) cloth covers. The 40 pages are uncut double pages (i.e. back blank). The albumen pictures and collotype plate (4 in total) are not numbered or included in the page count. The three albumen pictures are "Sacred Bridge at Nikko," "Interior of Nobleman's Palace," and "A Tea-House Restaurant in Kyoto." While not credited in the text, the albumen photos are believed to be by Kozaburo Tamamura with colored added in his studio (sometimes referred to as a picture factory) by a large (100+) staff of colorists. The subjects of this section are "Establishment of the Tokugawa Dynasty and Japan's Relations with the Orient in the Early Ages of the Christain Era." and "Japan's Debt to Contiental Neighborsin Early Eras." -- Condition. Good+. The first four leaves have a stain in the bottom margin (not entering the text or photograph area). The covers are worn and faded with tears, particularly at the head and food of the spine and corners. Internally the book is very clean. Occasional there is a tear to a page but no tear extends into the actual albumen pictures which are tipped onto the page or into the or the collotype flower picture. ~~~ Shipping Charges. Volume VIII (one volume only of a ten volume set), designated "Edition de Luxe" limited to 750 numbered copies this being number 134, folio (12 1/2 x 15+ in), silk covers with beveled edges, folded pages, 1 color flower collotype by Kazumasa Ogawa, 6 large hand colored albumen photographs (8 x 10 1/2 inch), 1 color art reproduction plate accompanied by an essay by Kakuzo Okakura, 22 small hand colored albumen text illustrations/photographs (ca 3 1/2 x 5 in), numbered pages 269-308, 49 pp (40 pages of text narrative with text illustrations + 8 full plates + 1 page art essay). This book contains "Chapter XII. Observations and Pastimes (continued)" (pages 269-90) and "Chapter XIII. Japan's Commercial and Political Intercourse with Foreign Countries" (pages 303-308). The 6 large albumen photographs are: 1) The Nikko Road, 2) Writing a Letter, 3) A Funeral Procession, 4) Japanese Shoes, 5) A Street of Shops and 6) Entrance to Inari Temple at Kyoto. ~ Condition. The book is Good+ condition. The covers are soiled and have small tears and scrapes, primarily along the edges. The corners are worn and bumped. Thre is a 2 x 4 inch tear to the covering on the back which is stained. Internally, the book is clean and free from faults. Only very light and occasional foxing. All the photographs are clean and much brighter than usual. None of the folded pages are severed/broken at the edge. Item Description: J.B. Millet Co, Boston, MA: (1897-98). Folio. 15 section (volume) set, 260 illustrations which includes 30 albumen photographs hand colored and 15 color collotypes (by K. Ogawa of flowers), 382 pp. Bound in pictorial stiff paper wraps backed in red cloth, Japanese fan-fold (i.e. uncut double pages) and containing the insert cautioning not to cut the pages. The plates are not numbered but this particular edition contains the five K. Ogawa flower collotypes which are normally not found in 10 volume sets. Section one has large chip to head of front panel, #14 chip to rear upper corner and #15 heavy chipping along bottom edge and smaller chip to front panel of wrappers, with some overall toning to wrappers, only minute wear to spines, otherwise a very nice worthwhile set. Folio. Each part in original cloth-backed printed wrappers. Front wrapper detached from first part only, edges chipped. Some moderate chipping to second part, at lower forecorner of front wrapper. Otherwise just some very minor chipping at edges of some wrappers. Generally a very nice, clean set. This elaborate publication displays the general fascination with Japanese things in the West at the end of the 19th century. Item Description: J. B. Millet Company, 1897. Hardcover. Book Condition: Good. 1st Edition. Folio, pp. 382. The complete set, bound in brightly coloured floral brocaded silk, with varying patterns, and paper label to front board. The editor of this set, Francis Brinkley (1841-1912), was born in Ireland and educated at Trinity College, before moving on to a military career beginning with his accepance at the Royal Military College, Woolwich, where he trained as an artillery officer. After graduation, he was invited by his cousin, then the Governor of Hong Kong, to serve as his aide-de-camp and adjutant. In 1867 he was attached to the British-Japanese Legation and, still being an officer in the Royal Artillery, served as assistant military attache to the Japanese Embassy. In 1871, he resigned his commission and began studying the Japanese language and culture in earnest. Eventually, he married a Japanese woman, with whom he had three children. He also owned and edited the "Japan Mail" which became the most influential English language newspaper in the far East. This set, the Yedo Edition, is designated no. 482 of only 1,000 issued, and presents a stunning portrayal of Japanese life, customs, cities, and the countryside. Each of the large volumes contains numerous black-and-white photos, and three delicately-coloured coloured albumen photographs by Tamamura Kozaburo, each with explanatory tissue guard (thirty in total). There are also five collotype flower plates (by K. Ogawa). Each volume bound in the Japanese style. Condition varies as amongst the volumes. Five are in very good condition; five have a foredge stain affecting extreme outer margin of pages. The binding of volume III is very soiled. All bindings tight. Some albumen photos have lightened.
