Fascinating large volume (11.5" x 16.5") of full page illustrations and photographs of Japan at the turn of the century - 1904 - highlighting its military power with numerous photographs of cruisers, battleships and torpedo boats, Japanese soldiers on the move in infantry and artillery. Time of the Russo-Japanese War. But also represented are tranquil landscapes and sacred bridges, wrestlers and workmen, nurses from the Intl. Red Cross, , geishas and a whole gallery of portraitsstarting with their Mikado Mitsuhito to generals, ministers, thinkers and heros. One photograph witnesses the unveiling of a monument to Commodore Perry. The front cover is designed by the famous American illustrator J.C. Leyendecker showing charging Japanese military men with drawn bayonettes and revolver and a dramatically curling Japanese flag as backdrop. Photographs and drawings by Henry Reuterdahl, Fletcher Ransom, Sidney Adamson and Genjiro Yeto. The interior of the book is in very good condition, no tears, a light spot here and there, It is printed in black and white with the only color being the title "JAPAN " printed in red. Only one page of text, the rest are pictures. , The front end paper is loose and worn around the edges, The covers are brown board with maroon printing and a glued on illustration, corners lightly bumped, painted linen spine - some spots are losing paint.
