About this Item: G. P. Putnam & Co, New York, 1856. Large folio (approx. 20½ x 15"), consisting of a title page, and introduction leaf, and 10 leaves of descriptive text to accompany each of the 10 plates, of which one is a lithograph portrait of Commodore Perry from a daguerreotype by P. Haas, 2 chromolithographs, 7 lithographs printed in 2 colors on India paper and mounted (as issued), original pictorial wrappers with the title enclosed by 8 vignette scenes and an American eagle at the top, the wrappers backed in blue cloth; the whole in the publisher's quarter green morocco lettered in gilt on upper cover; some soiling of the front wrapper and title page a little spotted, but over all very good or better. Bennett, p. 53: "The plates are very beautiful Japanese scenes and places of special interest, many times finer than the plates in the three-volume regular account of the Perry Expeditionose in the regular account of the Perry expedition." Heine (1827-1885) was the official artist on Perry's expedition to Japan in 1853-54. The sketches he produced of the places he visited and the people he encountered there, together with the daguerreotypes taken by his colleague Eliphalet Brown Jr., formed the basis of the official iconograhy of the American expedition to Japan which remains an important record of the country as it was before the foreigners arrived in force. Upon his return to New York in 1855 he published several books: a collection of prints entitled Graphic Scenes of the Japan Expedition; and the 400 sketches which were included in Perry's official report, as well as his memoirs, Reiss um die Welt nach Japan (Leipzig, 1856). Bennett, p. 53: "The plates are very beautiful Japanese scenes and places of special interest, many times finer than the plates in the three-volume regular account of the Perry Expedition." The handmade papers of Japan. A biographical: Berger, Sidney E.

About this Item: Bird & Bull Press, Newtown, 2001. Edition limited 170 copies, this the bookbinder Greg Campbell's copy, Campbell-Logan Bindery, and out-of-series; pp. 197, [7]; illustrations, facsimiles, photos, and samples tipped in; original quarter morocco, leather spine label, Japanese cloth over boards, cover stamped in gilt; prospectus laid in. In a cloth covered clamshell box with leather spine label. Fine. The gilt Japanese titling on the upper cover has been stamped upside down. Sid Berger called us a day or two after we'd catalogued this book and gave us the story. The entire edition was bound with the Japanese text on the cover upside down. When Morris received the book he was, shall we say, disturbed, and sent the entire edition back to Campbell-Logan where the book was stripped of its cloth cover and the error corrected. Berger tells me that only 3 of the edition still have the original binding with the upside down text: his, Henry Morris's, and this copy from the chastened binder. The first 4-volume set of Tindale's Handmade Papers of Japan is one of the finest books on Japanese papermaking published. This edition expands the text and includes a number of full page illustrations, color photographs, and 7 paper samples tipped in. Forty-Four A66. Seller Inventory # 50435

About this Item: Original hand-coloured engraving drawn by Georg Ehret and executed by J. M. Seligmann. Leaf measures 19.9 x 14.2 inches (50.5 x 36 cm). Fine condition. Some cosmetic retouching in gouache. Matted and ready for framing. From Christoph Trew's magnificent HORTUS NITIDISSIMIS OMNEM PER ANNUM SUPERBIENS FLORIBUS published in three volumes over a 36 year period from 1750-1786. Painted in a more opaque gouache to resemble a painting rather than the traditional practice of using translucent water-colours that allowed more of the engraving to show through. Each piece was meant to capture the flower at the peak of it's beauty instead of focusing solely on scientific detail. Ehret contributed 44 of the 180 illustrations in the entire work and is the single most important botanical artist of the era. HORTUS NITIDISSIMIS is considered to be one of the most sumptuous of the florilegia. Being one of the most elusive of the great flower books, the opportunity to own one of these leaves is reserved for only the most discriminating collectors. Seller Inventory # 25327

About this Item: Pauline E. Nichols, Not Designated, 2000. Pictorial Softcover. Condition: Very Good. Not Given. "In the following pages, you will be reading the collected letters of Pauline 'Peggy' Nichols. As a captain in the WAC, she wrote to her parents, with amazing frequency, while she was stationed in Occupied Japan during 1946 and 1947. Peggy served as general's aide {the only woman ranked as an aide rather than a secretary} to General R.L. Eichelberger, Commanding General of the 8th Army. In her key position she had many opportunities to meet and observe the top military and diplomatic figures operating in Japan at that time-and also managed to have a very active social life! Thanks to her mother, who saved every letter, we have a very personal record of a young woman's experiences during an important era in U.S. and international history. The letters appear largely as they were written, with minor editorial changes. In the interest of historical accuracy, the manuscript includes terms and phrases common and acceptable during World War II and the Occupation even though the author would not use those terms today. In several places throughout the manuscript, the author added clarifications or additionasl information not included in the original letters. The new material is clearly identified by italics and brackets. In most instances, this is material that the author did not feel comfortable revealing to her parents at the time. Overall, this collection provides a rare and intriguing account of Occupied Japan from a WAC officer's perspective-and a very special WAC officer at that!" This book has 378 pages and is illustrated + appendix. Worldcat lists NO available copies. Overall a VERY GOOD copy of this EXTREMELY SCARCE title. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. About this Item: Tokyo Tokimeki Festa Executive Committee, Tokyo, Japan, 1996. Pictorial Softcover. Condition: Fine. Not Given. "This new architectural space in Tokyo was born in the historical time-frame of the end of the 1990s. Standing in this space that seems to synbolize the crystallization of all the knowledge and technology possible for people to possess at the present time. I find that there are three things I want to record in the memory. These things are also the conceptions that served as the guiding principles for selecting contemporary works of art for the Tokyo International Forum. First, the Tokyo International Forum is located in a place that has historically been a hub for transportation. As the second defining theme of this architectural space and the art within it, I would like to raise the keyword of 'time.'.Finally, I would like to point out the fact that the Tokyo International Forum architecture and the project to install art within it were both guided by the conceptions and sensibilities of individuals. As you can see both from the plates introduced here and from actually moving within the space, the enjoyment of art at the Forum has been designed to serve as a 'hidden spice.' Strolling through the Plaza, you encounter a large sculpture. You view it from various angles. And your enjoyment of it will undergo various transformations according to the weathger, the play of sunlight and the movement of the wind. As for the works installed indoors, your eyes might be caught by a painting on the wall during a performance intermission, and there is also the group of works that stand quietly at rendezvous points, filling up our 'stopped time.' Many of the two-dimensional works that have been installed in the smaller conference rooms have also been selected for their suitability to a time for thinking and exchanging courtesies. The conference room is a semi-private space; the Forum offers a 'luxury of the spirit' in which it is possible to choose a conference room according to the works of an artist one admires." {KOIKE Kazuko}. This book has 132 pages and is profusely illustrated. The text is written in JAPANESE/ENGLISH. Overall, this is a FINE copy of this EXTREMELY SCARCE title. 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall. About this Item: Division Special Services Section, Japan, 1946, 1946. Paperback. Condition: Collectible: Good. First edition. Rare. Only edition. Large format, printed landscape. Blue and white photos with some text. Bound by ribbon. Some light liquid staining to edges, does not affect any pictures or text. Issued to the unit first in Nagasaki after the bomb. As stated: "This pictorial booklet of the 2nd Marine Division, commanded by Major General LeRoy P. Hunt, USMC, has been published under the supervision of the Division Special Services Section with the assistance of the Division Photographic Reproduction Sections. Individual credit to Pfc. Leo L. Wengert and Pfc. Herman E. Erke". First photos. "We walked into Nagasaki unprepared, and we were shocked as hell at what was there," Lyman Quigley remembered many years later. "Really, we were ignorant about what the hell the bomb was. We had no idea what we were going to see. We weren't given any instructions whatsoever. We were amazed, shocked--and yet stupefied. At the time, gruesome as the panorama of suffering was, it seemed to involve only other people's problems. Orders from above did not include any unusual precautionary guidelines or provisions. Quigley and his buddies drank city reservoir water, and worked in the midst of the most heavily damaged area without any protective clothing or special gear. They were not provided with radiation-dose badges or any other equipment to measure their exposure to radioactivity." Due to the size/weight of this book it is not available for expedited delivery; extra charges may apply for international shipping. Ships from Dinkytown in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
