About this Item: Privately Printed, Tokyo, 1965. Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: near fine. first edition. The earliest sample here is of Japanese paper from the year 730 and the earliest printed fragment is from a book printed at the Kyoto Monastery in 1349. Many of the papers were made in the Nara, Heian, Kamakura, Muromachi, and Edo periods. The paper samples are arranged chronologically. Also includes samples of palmleaf paper, papyrus stalk, etc. Each samples identified in both Japanese and English under the sample. 181 samples, all present. The second volume is a beautifully illustrated history of papermaking. Both volumes in the traditional Japanese string bindings with paper labels over beautiful hand-made paper covers. Both volumes fine. Set comes in a blue folding cloth folder (near fine) with traditional clasps. This set sold new in Tokyo in 1965 for $400 (about $3000 today). A great book about paper. The paper samples in the classic Thomas Tindale book, Handmade Papers of Japan (1952), came from the Seki colleciton. This is Mr. Seki's self-published work on the same topic. There is a pleasant simplicity about the presentation here that is very appealing. Seller Inventory # 3797

Signed in black marker on the first page by Kitajima. Soft cover. Printed wrappers; with photographically illustrated dust jacket and 3-inch obi. Photographs by Keizo Kitajima. Text in Japanese. Includes a bound, folded poster with text and illustrations on one side and a large, two-color reproduction on the other side. Unpaginated (156 pp.), with black-and-white and four-color plates throughout. [Cited in Martin Parr and Gerry Badger, The Photobook: A History, Volume III. (London and New York: Phaidon, 2014), and in Ryuichi Kaneko and Ivan Vartanian, Japanese Photobooks of the 1960s and '70s. (New York: Aperture, 2009).]. Fine in Near Fine dust jacket and obi (light crumpling to the crown of the jacket spine and slight wear to the extremities of the obi, else Fine). A fascinating and quintessentially Provoke-style glimpse of the pop cultural mecca that is Tokyo's Shinjuku district. From Parr and Badger: "The combination of black and white with colour is interesting, because this is a difficult trick to pull off. The tension between Kitajima's flamboyant, contrasty, edgy monochrome and his matter-of-fact, understated colour makes this one of the most distinctive books in the wide bibliography on Shinjuku nightlife." About this Item: Crown Publishers, Inc, New York, 1964. Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good+. 1st Edition. First edition (English), first printing. Signed in black ink on the half-title page by Klein. Hardcover. Black cloth-covered boards with title stamped in red and white on spine; with photographically illustrated dust jacket. Photographs and text by William Klein. Preface by Maurice Pinguet. 184 pp., with black-and-white gravure plates throughout. 14 x 10-3/8 inches. Out of print. Scarce.[Cited in Andrew Roth, ed., The Open Book. (Göteborg, Sweden: Hasselblad Center in association with Steidl Verlag, Göttingen, Germany, 2004).]. Near Fine (moderate shelf wear to the bottoms of the boards and waviness and light toning to the extremities of the text block, else Fine), in Very Good+ dust jacket (intact, but with several 1-inch closed tears, creasing to the flaps, wear and toning to the extremities, and foxing to the jacket interior). From David Campany: "William Klein's lasting legacy to photography will be his four city books: New York (1956), Rome (1959), Tokyo and Moscow (both 1964).Tokyo is my favourite, not least because it sees Klein returning to the city whose photographic culture he helped to revolutionize. In 1964 Tokyo was the most populous city on earth and the world's media were about to descend to cover the Olympic Games. Three years later James Bond arrived in You Only Live Twice, sealing a popular iconography for Tokyo that barely seems to have changed. Klein's assessment of the city incorporates every Tokyo cliché but in pushing them to breaking point it soars above them too. After New York and Rome Klein increased his page size so that when you open up the full-bleed double spreads of Tokyo they are more than half a metre wide. With those dense, complex compositions in your lap you feel like you're up close to a huge mural, not a page.this is where Klein is at his best, achieving the most powerful effects with the most unlikely material. I've no idea why he was in attendance at a meeting of an agricultural committee or how he got so close to the ceiling but his shot through a chandelier of bored bureaucrats in session is such a photographic joy. It is difficult to look at it and not imagine Klein muttering to himself: 'Jeeeesus this is boring! What can I do here? Ah, a chandelier!' .Of all his books it is Tokyo I take down from the shelf most often. It's so rich, so relentlessly inventive that I can never remember it all and find myself constantly surprised. It was published in New York and Tokyo. I've no idea how Tokyo received it. No doubt it was measured against the experience of those who lived there. For the rest who saw it in 1964 I imagine it was seductive, bewildering, breathless, cacophonous, grotesque, gorgeous, informative and very intelligent. It is still." Signed by Author. About this Item: Paroru-sha, Tokyo, 1981. Soft cover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. 1979/1981. First edition, second printing. Soft cover. Printed wrappers; with photographically illustrated dust jacket and 3-1/2 inch obi. (London and New York: Phaidon, 2014)]. Fine in Near Fine dust jacket and obi (light rubbing and wear to the extremities, else Fine). A fascinating and quintessentially Provoke-style glimpse of the pop cultural mecca that is Tokyo's Shinjuku district. From Parr and Badger: "The combination of black and white with colour is interesting, because this is a difficult trick to pull off. The tension between Kitajima's flamboyant, contrasty, edgy monochrome and his matter-of-fact, understated colour makes this one of the most distinctive books in the wide bibliography on Shinjuku nightlife.". About this Item: Hiromo Morishita, Kyoto, Japan, 1975. Hard Cover in Sleeve. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. First Thus. Oversized bound 262-page catalogue of two exhibitions: "10s, 20s and 30s: Inventive Clothes 1909-1939", held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Institute December 12, 1973-September 1, 1974, and "Sources of Modern Clothing Exhibition-Inventive Clothes 1909-1939" held at the National Museum of Modern Art in Kyoto March 25-May 25, 1975. Diana Vreeland's idea, naturally. She has contributed an essay, as have Yvonne Deslandres (in French), Mitsukuni Yoshida, and a group of Japanese historians on various aspects of the period. Worth it for the accumulated scholarship alone. Then there are the plates: dozens of them, full-size and in glorious color, of the work of Poiret, Callot Soeurs, Vionnet, Chanel, Schiaparelli, and other contemporaries. Even a chapter on the Ballets Russes. Text in English and Japanese, including profiles of the designers and a bibliography. This copy formerly belonged to Elizabeth Lawrence, master restorer at the Costume Institute for years, with her name to the binding and the slipcase, making this a marvelous association copy. Fine hardcover binding in Fine slipcase. Book. Seller Inventory # 4789
