About this Item: 1887, 1887. Large 8vo. Lvs 22 + 22, folded in the Japanese manner (fukuro-toji). Text in English and the illustrations have captions in English and Japanese (Kanji). With twenty double page colour woodcut prints. Original Japanese wrappers, printed paper labels on upper covers. First edition. According to the preface the editors originally planned to print ten volumes in this series but us we can understand only these two volumes were published. Another issue (two volumes) with bilingual text was published simultaneously. A collection of twenty biographies of famous people, for example: Iwakura Tomomi (19th century important statesman and ambassador); Murasaki Shikibu (10th century, famous authoress of The story of Genji); Sugawara no Michizane (9th century, learned scholar and statesman, worshipped as the god of literature); Prince Shotuko (died A.D. 620, great statesman and invented the first laws of Japan); Saigo Takamori (19th century samurai of the Satsuma daimo); Minamoto no Yoshiie ( 11th century, governor general of Mutsu); Takenouchi no Sukune (born in the first century, held various officies for more than 244 years) and; Empress Jingu Kogu (regarded as superhuman). About this Item: 1948, 1948. Large 8vo (21 x 26,8 cm). A privately printed orihon folding album. Comprising Japanese title, colophon and eight-double page coloured illustrations printed in the katazome stencil dyeing technique on handmade paper. Original dark-purple paper wrappers with title label. Housed in the original paper folder. First edition, limited to 150 copies. The work is devoted to the culture of Okinawa which had suffered unimaginable destruction just three years before, at the end of the second world war. Includes vivid and colourful illustrations of daily life at the market, traditional costumes and typical Ryûkyû bingata textiles. A few are printed in black and brown depicting pottery-making, temple life and traditional houses. A lovely copy of this unusual and very delightful work. Keisuke Serizawa (1895-1984) was a renowned Japanese textile designer who was promoted by the Japanese government for his unique katazome method. This is an original hand dyeing method using stencils to create patterns. He produced textiles for kimonos, wall scrolls, curtains, fans, paper prints, and he illustrated books. Second edition, first published in 1667 in only 500 copies. A scarce Swedish collection printed at the private press of Count Brahe in Wisingsborg by the German bookprinter Johan Kankel. They are the first proper travel accounts published in Sweden.Comprises:I. Nils Matson Kiöping s narrative of his voyage to the Cape of Good Hope, Arabia, Persia, and further on to the Far East. His story was partly imaginative but became enormously popular at the time. Kiöping was employed as a bosun on a Dutch ship which in 1648 took him to Guinea and later to the Cape of Good Hope. See Lasse Berg, När Sverige upptäckte Afrika, Stockholm 1997, pp. 11?15.II. Olof Eriksson Willman?s account of a voyage on a Dutch East India ship to East India, China and Japan between 1648?53. He visited Java which at the time was a Dutch colony.III. Willman?s interesting and accurate account of Japan (with separate title page dated 1673) which he visited in August 1651 for some months. He was able to participate in a Dutch embassy to Edo (Tokyo) which was reached in January 1652. His account of Tokaido, the ?East Sea Route?, is one of the earliest known in European literature. About this Item: 1867, 1867. Thick oblong 8vo. Size: 15 x 22 cm. Pp. (iv) with title and preface + lexicon double folded lvs (499), arranged alphabetically, ending with a Japanese title. Japanese red stamps on title. Leaves folded in the oriental manner. Title with brown staining. Original blue cloth, worn and soiled, internally in good condition. Housed in a specially made cloth box. Originally compiled by Tatsunosuke in 1862 (200 printed copies) and here revised by Kamenoskay. This is probably a second issue of the second edition. Cordier gives the date 1866 and the preface is also dated 1866. This dictionary is the first substantial English-Japanese vocabulary, the first edition of which predates Hepburn's Japanese - English dictionary by five years. According to the preface the first edition contained a number of errors regarding the Japanese and Chinese names of animals, plants and minerals that needed to be corrected. This has been done in the second edition with the assistance of Yanagawa Sunsam, Tanaka Yosiwo and others. Cordier BJ 672 (states 1866). This very attractive and rare album by a very popular Japanese female artist contains beautiful printed woodcuts executed in lovely colours, several highlighted with silver. Size: 7.5 x 24 cm. A double-sided folded book with twelve coloured woodblock prints and a colour woodblock printed title page. Original slightly cushioned decorated cloth and printed title label on upper cover. The beautiful prints depict scenes with kimono-attired women and girls in various sensitive settings titled as at spring time; a slight token of esteem; sudden shower; the beginning of the year; the odour of the plum blossoms; after school, etc. Captions in Japanese and English. Partly with some light dust at outer margins. One plate with small repair in margin. A rare work by a celebrated female artist Mizuno Hidekata (1875-1944). First edition of this early guide for Japanese to learn English by themselves. Comprising two parts: 1. Vocabularies listing the character, the English equivalent, the pronunciation and the Katana character; and 2. Sentences in Japanese with the English translation. Captain Frank Brinkley (1841-1912) came to Japan in 1867 as commander of a unit of the Royal Artillery stationed in Yokohama. Later he took up the post of foreign advisor to the new Meji government. He also became proprietor and editor of the English-language newspaper the "Japan Mail" (later merged with the Japan Times). Brinkley wrote several books related to Japanese studies, its history and language. This work seems very rare, no western library copies are found. Two editions of "Shin gogaku hitori annai"(New guide to English self taught) appeared in 1909 and 1911 respectively, probably later prints of this work (listed by Worldcat). Exquisite yellow morocco binding, stylishly decorated in gilt and blind on spine and covers, cover edges decorated in gilt, all edges gilt (Henrik Park, Esselte, Stockholm, 1954). Wrappers preserved. In a protective box with green cloth spine and the initials "EW" embossed in blind within a gilt circle on cover. Box with damaged joints and somewhat soiled lid. From the libraries of the distinguished Swedish book collectors Erik Wettergren and Nils Bonnier.Printed in 350 numbered copies, signed by the artist, of which this is number 157. The binding is composed by Henrik Park, bound by W. Kimström and gilt by K. Svensson. It was displayed at the 10th triennal in Milano in 1954, where it was awarded a diplome d'honneur, and later at the National Museum in Stockholm in 1956. Sarasa or calico is a plain woven textile, often not fully processed cotton, coloured and treated with various techniques. Originally it came from the city of Kolikkodu (Calicut) in south western India. It was imported to Japan in the 16th century by the Portugese. We assume that this is a pattern book that was used at the shop Kosode Gofukuten in the mid 19 the century. On rear cover the name Tominaga Shobei and a hand written Kyoto address are added. Inside the back cover the word Misaki is crossed out, maybe it's the name of the artist (?). A rare example of a complete hand written kimono design book from the late Edo period. Original coloured pictorial wrappers highlighted, silk ties. A very attractive programme of a Kabuki play "The Battle of Yashima". The play was arranged in connection with a visit by Prince Pu Lun, the nephew of the Chinese emperor and heir to the throne at the time.
