Referenced from the Bibliography of American Literature (BAL), no. 7936: "State B: Two states of the copyright page have been notes. Sequence not determined." Lafcadio Hearn (1850-1904; also known by the Japanese name of Koizumi Yakumo) was an international writer best-known for his collections of Japanese legends and ghost stories such as Kwaidan. Hearn was a well-traveled man, originating in part from his work as a newspaper correspondent. Eventually, Hearn found himself in Japan on assignment but took great interest in the country and its culture and chose to stay there for the remainder of his life. In Japan, Hearn took a teaching position. He also married Koizumi Setsu, a daughter from a samurai family, and they had four children. Hearn is especially notable for writing about Japan and sharing the information with western culture at a time when Japanese culture was still relatively unknown. This book has three sections: "Strange Stories," "Folklore Gleanings," and "Studies Here and There." "Strange Stories" contains the following: "Of a Promise Kept," "Of a Promise Broken," "Before the Supreme Court," "The Story of Kwashin Koji," "The Story of Umetsu Chubei," and "The Story of Kogi the Priest." "Folklore Gleanings" includes "Dragon-Flies," "Buddhist Names of Plants and Animals," and "Songs of Japanese Children." "Studies Here and There" contains "On a Bridge," "The Case of O-Dai," "Beside the Sea," "Drifting," "Otokichi's Daruma," and "In a Japanese Hospital.".
