A Japanese Mulberry Paper Stencil (31 x 41 cm sheet size), being a geometric motif of zigzags, originally thought of as a symbol of lightning. Their simplicity and directness make them appear quite modern. The stencils are made of two or more layers of handmade Mulberry paper laminated together, which is hardened and waterproofed with persimmon juice. Item Description: Circa 1840, Japan, 1840. Mulberry Paper Stencil. Book Condition: Fine. Edo Craftsman (illustrator). A Japanese Mulberry Paper Stencil (29 x 42 cm sheet size), being a beautifully intricate floral design of negative and positive space, giving the finished printed textile a sense of movement. Mulberry stencils normally comprise two or more sheets laminated together, whereas this stencil appears to be a single sheet (unless the sheets used were extremely fine) and has Japanese writing in faded ink within the stencil. A superb example in excellent original condition. BIBLIOGRAPHY: (1) Japanese Stencil Designs, One Hundred Outstanding Examples Collected And Introduced By Andrew W. Tuer. Item Description: Circa 1840, Japan, 1840. Mulberry Paper Stencil. Book Condition: Very Good. Edo Craftsman (illustrator). A Japanese Mulberry Paper Stencil (31 x 40 cm sheet size), being a bold asymmetrical design of sophisticated entwined motifs around three vertical poles. There is evidence of dye having been wiped from the surface of the stencil by the late Edo dyers, 1800-1840, who last used it. The stencils are made of two or more layers of handmade Mulberry paper laminated together, which is hardened and waterproofed with persimmon juice. An attractive design in excellent condition.
