Japanese lacquered accordion folded album,20 x 15.5 cm., lacks one of two ivory faces, else corners abit rubbed, contains 47 b.w. photos each ca. 14 x 8 cm.,somea bit larger/smaller, all clean excellent images. OBSCURE !The album has a penned dedication and presentation insidethe front cover, reading: "To Cousin Percy, with love fromAlfred & Thirza In Memory of Happy Days spent in Japan.Yokohama March 2nd, 1912."*This lovely album documents a journey by steam ship toBatavia, Java, then on to Rangoon, Burma. The photographsare mostly about postcard size, and are very clean and sharpimages.*The photographic development process left a silver tinge tothese photographs when slightly bent, it becomes moreobvious. There is no fading whatsoever, each image isstrong, clear and with good contrast. The photographsare mostly about postcard size, and are very clean and sharpimages.*A good number of the photographs have pencil notations onthe verso, telling where and who is depicted in thephotograph.*The story unfolds with the inscription, and then shows Mr. &Mrs. MacNarma sitting in the garden of the NetherlandsHotel, [Batavia] Java, with one more view of others sittingin the garden. A view of some Batavia government building, with may people sitting inside the foyer in the shade andothers in a horse-drawn carriage. Mr. K. Childes poses wittwo native young boys in the botanical gardens, and one moreof Mr. Childs and another foreigner both in pitch helmetsposing. More photos relaxing in the Hotel Netherlandsgarden, P.C. Mockett, Mr. Mrs. Foggart, Mr. Child as well. The visitors buy tropical fruits from a native vendor in theBotanical Garden, and all pose for the camera. Bataviastreet scene shows a native watering the street with dualsprinkling cans before L. Dobbelmann a Dutch-owned store, with English adverts.*The group now boards a tram and begins a journey to otherplaces around Java. The giant lily-pad pond, nativesdancing in a festival, views along the railroad tracks of anative house and farm in Jami, coconut trees, native carts, and then a train stop. There are several photos with "PCM"on the verso, meaning P.C. Mockett, whom was possibly thecreator of this album, at least he seems to be a centralfigure.*Tropical plants, a boy holding a huge umbrella, the steamtrain engine, natives in elaborate dress, local markets,Arrival at a large port, most likely Batavia preparing toboard a ship for onward journey to Burma, and Rangoon. Shows2 photos of the group milling about preparing to embark.*Ship-board photo of the group relaxing on the deck. Arrivalat Rangoon, Burma and the memorial "Travellers Palm" treephotograph ! Native bullock cart, ship-board poses, arrivalat what appears to be Thailand and its shrines. MansionHotel , Rangoon with their dancing girls show, Rangoon park,Rangoon Street scene and British-buildings, natives, and theRangoon Great Pagoda.*CONDITION:The album is constructed of very firm stiff board, with fourcorners cut into the card to allow the insertion ofphotographs. The hinges are very solid and the whole issolid and not loose or otherwise shaken. A lovely example.*THE PHOTOGRAPHS:The photographs were placed into the album by its formerowner or photographer, we have removed each to read thecaptions for cataloging and replaced them in the exact orderthey were found. Some seem to be out of place in that theyare mixed up according to place and not all in a logicalorder. Regardless they remain "as is" for any futureresearcher to make more sense of them. Some have no captionsat all. There are other captions below some of the photos inpencil on the album pages, perhaps place there later, we donot know. There remains a few pages on both sides of thedouble-sided album that have no photographs, this is nearthe end.*By and large a nice example of foreigners taking a nicejourney to the Exotic South East Asian area and documentingtheir visit with photographic mem. Item Description: early 20th century. Book Condition: Very Good+. Morocco over flexible boards, "Photographs" stamped in gilt on upper board, bound with thin black rope; oblong (approx. 8-by-6 inches); contains more than 150 black leaves, each with a b/w photograph (silver gelatin print) affixed to the recto and labelled by hand, in white ink. (Photos, occasionally, are attached to the verso as well. Nearly 200 photographs total. Average photo size is about 4.75-by-3.5 inches.) Boards scuffed along the edges; slight wave to text block; photographs are in near fine condition, a few subject to some a touch of fading and light rubbing. Though only a few images directly mention the "Steamer Manchuria" (showing members the band, a group of Russian children, and "Embarking at Honolulu"), it is likely that this rich travelogue captures it's entire voyage through the Far East -- either on it's regular route for the Pacific Mail Steamship Company's trans-Pacific service, or in 1905, when the Mancuria sailed from San Francisco on a goodwill tour of the Far East, carrying a large U.S. Congressional delegation under the leadership of Secretary of War, William Taft. There are very few personal photographs to establish our photographer's identity, as most pictures are of landmarks, landscapes, and artifacts (such as a bamboo organ in Manila, pagodas in Rangoon, horse-drawn carriages in various locations). The few images that include people are usually candid, with their subjects ignoring (or unaware of) the photographer -- such as people playing games on deck, and surfing photos taken at Waikiki beach. And one, labelled "Diving for Coins, Singapore," is particularly lovely, showing the young men jumping from their canoes. A long, far-flung journey, with scenes of Manila, Rangoon, Penang, Singapore, Java, Seoul, Hawaii, California (San Francisco, Yosemite Park), and Arizona (Grand Canyon). Demonstrates a curious eye (it seems that the elephants working in the lumber yards of Rangoon were particularly compelling) and, thankfully, an adept one, as all photographs are nicely composed, exposed, and printed. Item Description: Singapore, 1910. Book Condition: Very Good. Singapore, Java, circa 1910. Unique collection of photographs from a voyage to Southeast Asia, featuring close-up detail of the Borobudur reliefs, and colonial interests in Singapore. Oblong Folio album measuring approximately 39 x 31 cm, green cloth over gold and red snakeskin patterned boards. Contains 32 photographs, a few of which are photographic postcards, several of which are large format, mounted onto heavy cardstock leaves. Photographs vary in size, the smallest measuring approximately 11 x 8 cm, and the largest 25 x 21 cm. Occasional creasing, otherwise in Very Good Condition, unusual captivating scenes. Photographs of indigenous tradition in Singapore include young boys preparing pineapple for market, merchant canoes in the harbour, three young ladies wearing only loin cloths, and a father-son team leading their water buffalo for a day's work. We also find views of the outside influences and development with the entrance to the botanical gardens, New Erslande Road and promenade with horse-drawn carriages rushing by, Chinese temples and shops, and Javanese women using a cement 'rice cleaner' - a manual task comprising a hollow cement cylinder and long wooden poles. Finally, we see the steamship 'Hye Leong' built in 1882 by Blackwood & Gordon, at the time of this photograph, owned by Straits Steamship Co. Ltd. (broken up in 1926). Highlights from Java in Indonesia, include remnants and ruins of an abandoned colonial Dutch sugar factory, a Javanese dance performance, and eight (8) images of the 9th century temple known as Borobudur, featuring its exquisite and mysterious reliefs, including one on the east side depicting a three masted vessel sailing the old Cinnamon trade route that linked Indonesia to Africa. On the Rupadhatu level, we see a statue of Buddha encased under a peaked dome, and a narrow stairway passing through the uppermost of the carved arches of Kala. The final panel of the Rama series is photographed, located just to the northeast of the entranceway, and portraying Rama and Laksmana together with Hanuman and his army of monkeys, preparing to cross the bridge they have built to connect the mainland to the island of Lanka, to go see Sugriva - king of the monkeys. Also included is a view on the approach of the temple, and one of the holey stupas on the Arupadhatu level which carry the superstition that if one could touch Buddha through the holes one's wishes would come true. The album concludes with a view of the Grand Hotel du Louvre in Menton, on the French Riviera, Cote d'Azur region. Photo. Bookseller Inventory # 025743
