Item Description: Contact Press, Toronto, Ontario, Canada, 1963. Card covers. Book Condition: Near Fine. First printing. 54 pp. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Light card covers printed in red and black in dust wrapper. 1 of 200 copies printed in near-fine condition.Light edgewear and a few creases to covers. Extraordinary inscribed copy. On the half title, the poet has written: "A poem is something/you call a poem/P-O-E-M/or P-O-M-E/and works/Milton Acorn/in loving appreciation /of/Joe Rosenblatt/Joe Irving/Red Lane/and Lionel Kearns (MA)". The inscription likely dates from the mid-'60's when "People's Poet" Acorn was living in Vancouver. He used to hang out in a coffee house named The Advance Mattress Company, and was involved politically with the LSA (League for Socialist Action), a Trotskyite organization. Joe Irving was a folk singer and a poet in residence at the LSA offices on Granville Street. Richard Stanley "Red" Lane (1936-1964) was the older brother of poet Patrick Lane and a promising West Coast poet in his own right. Joe Rosenblatt got his early start as a poet with assistance from Acorn, Al Purdy and Earle Birney. Lionel Kearns was a young poet at UBC and a member of the original Tish group.
