Item Description: DROZ, 2012. Exposition : 222x152mm 810g. Ouvrage Neuf. Bookseller Inventory # 9782600015547

Item Description: Eugrammia Press, London, 1962 reprint of 1561 edition published by A. Lyon., 1962. Limited edition of 735 numbered copies, of which 700 were for sale. Bound by Zaehnsdorf in quarter-morocco and printed boards, gilt spine, top edge gilt, mould-made paper, folio, unpaginated. From the prospectus: "Jean Duvet's illustrations to the Apocalypse are considered to be superior to any other French engraved book illustrations of the sixteenth century and have been compared with Durer's woodcuts of the same subject. They have never, however, achieved the recognition they deserve, because of their great rarity and the difficulty in reproducing them faithfully. Only five fine copies of the book with text remain and in none of these do the engravings compare with the set which the Cabinet des Estampes of the Bibliotheque Nationale possesses. In this facsimile the Eugrammia Press have taken the text of the copy in the British Museum and combined it with the Bibliotheque Nationale engravings, to make a beautiful reproduction of de Tournes' original edition. Jean Duvet was by profession a goldsmith, but his fame now rests on his engraved prints. . He is the earliest French copper-plate engraver whose name is known but the place and date of bis death are unrecorded. Duvet was certainly producing prints by the year 1520. His style, although derived partly from Raphael and Mantegna, even to the extent of borrowing details, is distinctive; robust, expressive, and intent. . The publication of Duvet's Apocalypse in facsimile will facilitate the study of an important artist and will provide a focal point for appreciation of his work, which, once considered disconcertingly wild, is now excitingly attractive to a public in sympathy with expressionism in art. The text illustrations have been reproduced by collotype by L. van Leer & Co Ltd of Amsterdam on Atlas mould-made paper specially made by W. & R. Balston in their Maidstone mill. The facsimile is quarter-bound in red morocco with gilt tops and printed sides and is by Zaehnsdorf Ltd. The edition is limited to 735 copies of which 700 are for sale." From a contemporary review: "Both the extremely high standard of reproduction and the unhackneyed choice of subject make this facsimile edition of Jean Duvet's illustrations to the Apocalypse a very desirable possession. Both the illustrations and text are reproduced in collotype by L. van Leer Co. of Amsterdam, and apart from a slight mistiness inherent in any offset process they give a very exact rendering of the original." Copy No. 640. Very Good. Bookseller Inventory # ABE-11735
