Item Description: Something Else Press, New York, 1964. First printing. 360 pp. (271; 89), 8vo. Two books back-to-back. Blue buckram and gilt spine, in illustrated dust-jacket. Light spotting to foredge and endsheets, otherwise a very nice copy in a very good, unclipped jacket with edgewear, a couple of short closed tears, and a very small loss at one corner. The first book of the Something Else Press and a crucial document of Fluxus, marking Higgins’s departure from the group (at least, as directed by George Maciunas). Macunias was originally to be the book’s publisher, but long delays drove Higgins to establish his own press. Jefferson's Birthday "consists of all the things that Dick Higgins wrote, composed, or invented between April 13th, 1962 and April 13th, 1963" (April 13 being Thomas Jefferson’s birthday); Postface is a long memoir of "the development of the new arts," and one of the main accounts of the origins of Fluxus, in which Higgins articulates his criticisms of Macunias’s approach. This copy is inscribed on the first blank, in the year of publication, from Higgins to Fluxus colleague Nam June Paik, and then inscribed on the second blank at a later date from Paik to a Mr. McKay. A marvelous association for an important book. Bookseller Inventory # 3618
