About this Item: Willoughby and Co., 1850. Hardcover. Condition: Good. B004GQOPIC No date, but circa 1850-1855 (per British Library listing), Willoughby & Co. (London), 5 1/2 x 8 1/2 inches tall full leather bound, triple gilt ruled boards, elaborately gilt-tooled spine with five raised bands and gilt-lettered green and red leather labels, gilt ruled board edges, all page edges gilt, pale pink endpapers with pastedowns framed by gilt dentelles, frontispiece and extra illustrated title page, and twenty other full-page steel engravings by British caricaturist and book illustrator George Cruikshank (1792-1878) - lacking one engraving ('Seamanship versus Horsemanship' which should be at p.158) but an otherwise complete copy, vii, [1], 312 pp. Slight rubbing and moderate edgewear - especially along exterior hinges and lower tips. Half-inch split in leather at bottom of front hinge, and fraying to the lower spine cap, but the binding is quite solid. Very slight staining to extra illustrated title page and frontispiece. A tiny pinhole to center of title page. Otherwise, apart from marginal age toning to the engravings, a very good copy - clean, bright and unmarked - of this uncommon, handsomely illustrated edition, in a splendid period binding. ~SP17~ [2.0P] Matthew Henry Barker (1790-1846), was an English sailor, journalist, newspaper editor and writer of sea tales. Born in London, at an early age Barker joined an East Indiaman, and afterwards served in the Royal Navy. Retiring from the service, he commanded a hired armed schooner, and was employed in carrying despatches to the English squadrons on the southern coasts of France and Spain. On one occasion he fell into the enemy's hands, and was detained for some months as prisoner of war. In 1825, he became editor of a West Indian newspaper, and was afterwards employed, from 1827 to 1838, in a similar capacity as editor of The Nottingham Mercury. Under the name of 'The Old Sailor,' he wrote a number of lively and spirited sea-tales, very popular in their day, including the work at sale here. He was naval editor of the United Service Gazette, and a frequent contributor to the Literary Gazette, Bentley's Miscellany, and the Pictorial Times. In addition to this book, Barker's works include: Land and Sea Tales, 2 vols., 1836; Topsail-sheet Blocks, or the Naval Foundling, 3 vols., 1838; Life of Nelson, 1836; The Naval Club, or Reminiscences of Service, 3 vols., 1843; The Victory, or the Wardroom Mess, 3 vols., 1844.
