Item Description: London Printed for the Author sold by R and J Dodsley and many others, 1763. 2 volumes, 8vo, pp v, [15, subscribers and errata], 336: [2], 367, with engraved vignettes on title pages, bound in contemporary calf, spines gilt with raised bands and double red/black labels, a little worn at spine ends and corners, minor browning or spotting only, a very good set, FIRST EDITION OF HOOLE'S TRANSLATION; Tasso's late sixteenth century poem was influential in mythologizing the crusades of the previous century. Following the Fairfax translation of 1600 this version by Hoole would become the standard one for the eighteenth century English reader. It was well-subscribed, including by Samuel Johnson, who admired this version and remained Hoole's friend. He supplied the the three page dedication 'To the Queen' for this work. Item Description: Printed for R and J Dodsley, P Vaillant, T Davies, J Newbery and Z Stuart, 1764. 2 vols., 12mo., Second Edition, on laid paper, with fine engraved title-vignettes; eighteenth century tree calf, sides with double frame border in gilt, backs with five raised bands, second compartments with red leather labels ruled and lettered in gilt, all other compartments elaborately ruled and tooled in gilt to a floral design, gilt edges, marbled endpapers, boards moderately age-worn and scuffed, corners bruised, labels chipped with minor loss (but all gilt legible), backstrip tooling mildly worn, joints rubbed, hinges tender (one cracked but just holding), else a clean crisp copy in wholly unrestored period binding. With the half-titles which are sometimes absent. The title-vignettes are by A. Walker. Hoole's translation, the first in English, was first printed for the author in the previous year. The dedication 'To the Queen' was written by Johnson who subscribed for a copy of the first edition. 'Mr. Samuel Johnson, whose judgement I am happy in being authorised to make use of on this occasion, has given me leave to publish it, as his opinion, that a modern translation of the Jerusalem Delivered is a work that may very justly merit the attention of the English reader' (preface p.xiv). Vol. 1 is the second printing of 1807, (virtually identical to first edition of 1794) Vol. 2 is the first edition thus, published in 1794. Printed by Bodoni. There was also an imperial quarto edition which is often erroneously catalogued as a folio. Text in Italian. Both volumes were contemporaneously bound in identical half-leather with marbled boards, endpapers and edges. Both bear book plates on f.e.p. for John Walbanke Childers. Following title page in Vol. 1 is a dedication page which bears the text, "All' augustissimo cattolico monarca delle Spagne Carlo IV di Borbone imperadore delle Indie, ec.; Giambatista Bodoni suo tipographo di camera." Both volumes are in good condition, with rubbed covers and edges, spines are missing pieces of leather exposing various layers underneath, binding tight and sturdy, interior clean with some light foxing throughout. First Published in 1581, Tasso's (1544-95) verse epic on the 11th-century First Crusade and the love of Tancred and Clorinda is one the masterpieces of Italian literature.
