Stressing their pride in Jewish culture and tradition, these Jewish liberationists speak to their people from opposing ends of the political spectrum. "Jewish radicals," as defined by the editors, range from the militants of the Jewish Defense League to the young men and women who are attempting to peacefully restore human dignity and purpose to the leadership of Israel grown inflexible as a result of their existence in a country continually on the brink of war. The contributors succeed in their goal~to encourage a pride in being Jewish, to reaffirm Jewish culture, to discuss the equality of men and women within the Jewish tradition and to present the views of some of the' radical groups which are a part of the "Jewish liberation movement." Among the close to forty writers represented in this volume are men and women who examine the oppression of Jews in the Soviet Union and the role of the conglomerate~like, complacent, status quo~seeking American~Jewish "establishment" vis~a~vis younger Jews vitally concerned with their heritage and social questions rather than bigger and better temples in Scarsdale or Shaker Heights. The Jewish radicals find that American Jews are beset by severe dilemmas~their role within a predominantly non~Jewish society, their feelings towards the black liberation movement (positive insofar as equality; negative when black anti~Semitism rears its head), and the relation between Jewish leftists and their political movements which unjustifiably condemn the State of Israel for demanding its right to survive. All of these critical issues are examined, from different points of view, by such wellknown proponents of Jewish consciousness as Arthur Waskow and Rabbi Meir Kahane, to name two. Virtually all of the articles, poems, and cartoons in this book have been carefully chosen from the above~ground and underground Jewish press by the editors. Jewish Radicalism is the first political compendium of philosophies from the Jewish liberation movement and serves as an important introduction to the ideas and ideals of Jewish youth and the fears and conflicts of its parents."If I am not for myself, who will be for me? And if I am only for myself, what am I? And if not now, when?"-Hillel the Elder. Contributors =M.J.
