Item Description: Elkins Park, PA; Reform Congregation Keneseth Israel, 1961. Original Wraps. 8vo. 68 pages. 24 cm. Illustrated First edition. 12 black and white photographic reproductions of documents, photographs of scenery and portraits. "Delivered as the Presidential Address of the Fifty-Ninth Annual Meeting of the American Jewish Historical Society". This piece outlines an argument put forward by Korn that, "Jewish behavior and opinions in the South before the Civil War were in ‘no appreciable way different from their non-Jewish neighbors. ’ [ ] Jews of the Old South functioned as part of the general social pattern and close examination of their role disclosed that ‘being Jewish did not play any discernible role in the determination of the relationship of Jews to slavery’. " (Jewish Telegraphic Agency 20 Feb 1961) Some shelfwear, otherwise clean and bright. Very Good condition. (AMR-43-23) xx. Bookseller Inventory # 31458

Item Description: Printed by Press of Maurice Jacobs Inc. for Reform Congregation Keneseth Israel, Elkins Park, PA, 1961. Softcover. Book Condition: vg- to near fine. First edition. Large octavo. 68pp. Original printed wrappers. Decorative title-page. Scarce and fascinating work in which the author makes a strong and persuasive case that there were few Jews in the planting class in the South; that Jews had historically been forced into commercial enterprises; that in the Old South they were typically city dwellers; that a small number participated in the domestic slave trade; that they treated their slaves no better or worse than other slave holders; and that the few Jews in the South without exception endorsed slavery. The thrust of Korn's work is that Jews were not much different from other white southerners in their views on race and slavery. This study is profusely illustrated with 8 b/w photographic reproductions of documents, portraits and views. Wrappers with minor smudges to the top right corner of the front cover, and some light smudges and a few scratches to the back cover. Wrappers in overall very good-, interior in near fine condition overall. Bookseller Inventory # 43303
