Item Description: Speaking Tiger Books, 2015. Softcover. Book Condition: New. First edition. And now the Ranee, having invited me to come closer to the purdah, began to pour forth her grievances; and, whenever she paused, the women by whom she was surrounded, set up a sort of chorus [?] ?Woe is me!? ?What oppression!? It reminded me somewhat of a scene in a Greek tragedy? comical as was the situation. Novelist, intrepid traveller, barrister-at-law, newspaper editor and uninhibited gossip, John Lang lived for a number of years in pre- and post-Mutiny British India, and his writings constitute some of the most vivid records of the time. Lang describes his meeting with the Ranee of Jhansi?soon to become the focal point of the rebellion?as well as his counsel to her; he also chronicles the wondrous and tragic life of ?Black and Blue?, a boy of mixed British and Indian parentage, and his claims to a peerage in England. And, narrating a march in the Upper Provinces, Lang provides an eyewitness account of eight thousand monkeys, gathered in Deobund for a clan meeting. Written with a historian?s sense of detail, a raconteur?s delight in the unexpected, and a keen sense of the absurd, John Lang?s travel diary is a riveting read. Printed Pages: 208. Item Description: Agam kala Prakashan, 2004. Hardcover. Book Condition: New. First edition. This work brings forth a very important aspect, which somehow has been hitherto overlooked by the learned authors who have written upon the life and times of Rani Laxmibai of Jhansi. The new aspect or the NEW LIGHT is the unique role played by the Rani`s father Moropant Tambe in the affairs of Jhansi. Moropant was a highly learned Marhatta Brahmin, and a genius in his own right. When the Rani was four years old her mother died and since then it was Moropant who was both father and mother to the Rani. He gave her a liberal education and also encouraged her to learn the martial arts of those times. Little did he know that he was training a Queen of immortal fame during the turbulent times of the Mutiny of 1857 at Jhansi. The book unfolds the daring and selfless role that Moropant played in the interests of his daughter. He deeply loved his only daughter and was always at her side through thick and thin. In the end he sacrificed his life for her cause, dying an ignoble death by the hangman`s rope. Thus a new light has been thrown on the immortal saga of the Rani`s life. Only two authors, Dr. D.V. Thamankar and Joyce Lebra Chapman came very near to this aspect in their narrations but had somehow missed the essential core. Contents: Foreword; Preface; List of Illustrations; I. THE ENVIRONS OF JHANSI : Early Life and Marriage of Rani Laxmibai; From Manu to Laxmibai II. MUTINY AT JHANSI : The Grand Plan : Diplomacy Par Excellence III. SURRENDER AND THE MASSACRE : The Jhokan Bagh Massacre and Termination of the `Grand Plan` IV. DIPLOMACY CONTINUED : V. SIEGE OF JHANSI : The Battle of Betwa; The Rani at Kalpi; The Battle of Koonch; The Battle of Golowlee VI. THE CAPTURE OF GWALIOR : The Battle of Kota-ki-Sarai; Martyrdom of The Rani; Probable Reasons for the Non-Restoration of Jhansi to Rani by the British; 1. Murder of Andrew, Scott and Purcell; 2. The Massacre of the Europeans and their Families at Jhokzn Bagh; 3. The Adopted Son; 4. Beginning of a Dubious Policy; 5. A Viable Settlement Could Have Been Possible VII. THE IMMORTAL RANI : Character and Personality; Religious and Social Activities; The Rani as a Diplomat; The Rani as a Warrior; A Patron of Art and Culture; Final Assessment Printed Pages: 120. Item Description: Harper Collins, 2016. Hardcover. Book Condition: New. 1st Edition. On 3 July 1943, Subhas Chandra Bose stepped off a Japanese military plane in Singapore, pledged to finally free India from British rule, and created what was perhaps the first female infantry fighting unit in military history, the Rani of Jhansi Regiment (RJR). His young recruits were from Indian families of the diasporas in Singapore, Malaya and Burma, and consisted entirely of civilian volunteers lacking any prior military training. These women soldiers, deployed to the steamy jungles of Burma during the two last years of World War II, were determined to follow their commander to victory and to the liberation of India. More than seven decades later, their history has been forgotten, and their service and the role played by Bose himself unexplored with true rigour. Through in-depth interviews with the surviving Ranis - now in their late seventies and nineties - and meticulous archival research, historian Vera Hildebrand has uncovered extensive new evidence that separates the myth of the Bengali hero and his jungle warrior maidens from historical fact. The result is a wholly fresh perspective on the remarkable women of the RJR and their place in Indian and world history. The truth is every bit as impressive as the myth. Item Description: House of Commons (London), London, 1855. 1st Edition. 3 single page genealogical trees, 32pp. British Parliamentary paper (431). Disbound from a large volume of unrelated papers, an excellent clean copy. Jhansi was an important territory to the south west of Gwalior in Central India. In 1857 it rose to prominence when its female ruler, the Rani, took a leading role against the British during the Mutiny. This paper deals with the problems of succession. "Maharajah Gungadhur Rao, the Rajah of Jhansi, died in the end of the month of November 1853. He left no child; but on the day before he died he adopted a son, and his widow, the Luchsmee Baee, now solicits the Government of India to recognise the adopted son as the successor to the Rajah of Jhansi" states Lord Dalhousie at the beginnning of a long minute which concludes with his decision that the Rani should be liberally provided for but that the administration of Jhansi should be made over to the Lieutenant-Governor as suggested by the Political Agent for Gwalior, Bundelkund and Rewah (Major D A Malcolm). Item Description: Manohar, 2015. Hardcover. Book Condition: New. Dust Jacket Condition: New. 1st Edition. Under the heroic leadership of Ranee Lakshmi Bai, Jhansi and Bundelkhand played an extremely important role in India’s War of Independence in 1857. Her Martyrdom placed not only Jhansi but the entire Bundelkhand region into a place of pride in our history. Much has been written on Ranee Lakshmi Bai, but no attempt has been made so far towards a systematic and chronological compilation and publication of the documents relating to that period preserved in the National Archives, New Delhi, Regional Archives, Allahabad, Madhya Pradesh State Archives, Bhopal and with the princely families of Bundelkhand. The present volume is an attempt in that direction and will add immensely to our knowledge of Bundelkhand, particularly on Jhansi and the battle that ensued between Ranee Lakshmi Bai and the British. These documents throw light on the rebellious activities of not only Ranee Lakshmi Bai and her army commanders, but also present a descriptive account of their activities during the revolt, causes of rebels defeat, and the downfall of the Jhansi state.
