About this Item: Forgotten Books, 2018. Paperback. Condition: New. Language: English . Brand New Book ***** Print on Demand *****. Excerpt from Joan of Garioch The first dinner gong has just struck. It is half-past seven. Each day at this hour Owens has laid out my evening clothes, put a can of hot water in my dressing room, and there are fires in all the empty rooms down stairs: in the large dining room where I eat alone, in the large drawing-room where I sit alone, and in the square hall where no one ever comes to ask for me. No wonder that I am mostly up here, where I can take her portrait from its case, and place it on my writing-table; where the past confronts me; and where I have such company as few men of my day have known and loved, aye, fought with and overcome. Here in this room, where I let no one dist me, there are, indeed, splendid and puissant ghosts. Below, where I eat, or sit for an hour after eating, there is nothing. My servants are there, an old dog, and furniture that I took with the house. When I go to Lon don, this room, they tell me, is cleaned and put in order. They can do as they please about that; for when I walk, or when I go from here, her portrait is always with me, in its separate pocket, next my heart. It sounds foolish, perhaps; but can I help it, knowing what I have known, waiting as I am waiting I have nothing else; only the sealed envelope in which it came to me, written in whose hand? Not hers. Now I must change my clothes and prepare for dinner. It is a solitary, silent meal. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. About this Item: London: Macmillan & Co., 1908. Hardcover. Condition: Good. 1st Edition. Decorative blue cloth. 8vo. 350pp. Illustrated. Bookplate. Inscribed to the author's friend, Eugene Plunkett. The inscription consists of a 30-line humorous poem in the author's hand about the creation of the novel and the recipient's part in it. A novel about a foreign news correspondent and his adventures in Latvia during the Russian revolution of 1905. Albert Kinross (1870-1929) was an English journalist, magazine editor and novelist. He was London correspondent for The Boston Transcript and associate editor of The Outlook. He later served as drama critic for the Morning Post and art critic for The Academy. In 1905-06 he was a special correspondent in the Russo-Japanese War and subsequent Russian uprising and later in Greece. In 1907 he gave up journalism and began writing novels and stories. On the outbreak of World War I he joined the British army and served for five years in France, Greece, Egypt and Palestine, retiring with the rank of captain. He was editor of The Balkan News in 1916 and deputy military editor of The Palestine News in 1918. Our research has turned up little about Eugene Plunkett, the recipient of the author's inscription, except that he was a friend of H.G. Wells, Joseph Cornad other writers of the period and a book collector in California. A good copy with some light soiling to the covers and some wear to the spine tips and front cover corner. The endsheets are browned but the text is good with some light soiling. Inscribed by Author(s). Seller Inventory # 8066
