Théodore de Bèze auch: Theodor von Beza (* 24. Juni 1519 in Vézelay, Burgund; † 13. Oktober 1605 in Genf) war ein Genfer Reformator französischer Herkunft. Muretus ist der latinisierte Name des französischen Humanisten Marc Antoine Muret (* 12. April 1526 in Muret bei Limoges; † 4. Juni 1585 in Rom). Im Alter von 18 Jahren zog er die Aufmerksamkeit von Julius Caesar Scaliger auf sich und wurde in das erzbischöfliche Kolleg nach Auch zu Vorlesungen eingeladen. Hinterher lehrte er Latein in Villeneuve und dann in Bordeaux. Einige Zeit vor 1552 hielt er eine Reihe von Vorlesungen im Kolleg des Kardinal Lemoine in Paris vor einem großen Auditorium, darunter König Heinrich II. und Königin Katharina von Medici. Sein Erfolg verschaffte ihm viele Feinde, die ihn 1553 unter der Anklage der Häresie und Sodomie ins Gefängnis werfen ließen, aus dem ihn mächtige Freunde jedoch wieder befreiten. Der gleichen Anklage in Toulouse konnte er sich nur die Flucht entziehen. Die Archive der Stadt belegen, dass er 1554 in effigie als Hugenotte verbrannt wurde. Nach einem unsicheren Wanderleben und einigen Jahren in Italien erhielt er 1559 eine Einladung von Kardinal Ippolito d’Este, sich in Rom niederzulassen, die er auch annahm. 1561 besuchte Muret noch einmal Frankreich im Gefolge des Kardinals bei der Konferenz zwischen Katholiken und Protestanten in Poissy. 1563 kehrte er nach Rom zurück. Seine Vorlesungen verschafften ihm europaweit Reputation, deretwegen er 1578 ein verlockendes Angebot des Königs von Polen erhielt, Lehrer der Jurisprudenz in seinem neuem Kolleg in Krakau zu werden. Muretus hingegen, der um 1576 einem Orden beigetreten war, wurde durch die Großzügigkeit von Papst Gregor XIII. veranlasst, in Rom zu bleiben, wo er sieben Jahre später starb. Johannes Secundus (auch Janus Secundus, eigentlich Johann Nico Everaerts; * 15. November 1511 in Den Haag; † 25. September 1536) war ein niederländischer Dichter, Maler und Bildhauer (was das Renaissance-Ideal eines umfassenden Künstlers war). Seine beiden Brüder - Hadrianus Marius und Nicolaus Grudius - waren ebenfalls berühmte neulateinische Dichter. Sein Vater war Nicolaes Everaerts, ein seinerzeit berühmter Jurist und Freund des Erasmus von Rotterdam. 1528 zog die Familie von Den Haag nach Mecheln, wo Secundus sein erstes Werk mit lateinischen Elegien verfasste. 1532 ging er zusammen mit seinem Bruder nach Bourges, um Rechtswissenschaften zu studieren. Er erwarb dort seine Lizenz (licentia) und ging im Jahr 1533 nach Madrid an den spanischen Hof Karl V., wo ein weiterer Bruder, Grudius, wirkte. Dort verbrachte Johannes zwei Jahre als Sekretär des Erzbischofs von Toledo. Aus Krankheitsgründen kehrte er nach Mecheln zurück und starb bei St. Amand im September 1536 im Alter von 24 Jahren. Item Description: Lugduni-Batavorum, vaeneunt Parisiis, Apud Josephum Barbou, 1779, 1 volume in-12 de 160x90 mm environ, 12-iv-396 pages, reliure plein veau fauve marbré, dos lisse portant titres dorés sur pièce de titre bordeaux, orné ce caissons à motifs dorés, chasses et coupes dorées, encadrement d'un triple filet doré sur les plats, tranches dorées, ex-libris sur le premier contreplat. Avec 2 portraits en frontispice de chaque partie. Notes manuscrites au stylo rouge sur la première garde, coins émoussés, petits frottements sur le cuir avec dorure effacée par endroits, sinon bon état. Théodore de Bèze, né le 24 juin 1519 à Vézelay et mort le 13 octobre 1605 à Genève, est un humaniste, théologien protestant, traducteur de la Bible, professeur, ambassadeur et poète. Il fut le porte-parole de la Réforme en France au colloque de Poissy, puis pendant les guerres de religion.
