Item Description: Ceskoslovenský spisovatel, Prague, 1968. Square octavo (16.2 × 16.2 cm). Original blind black wrappers with gray printed dust wrapper; 130, [5] pp. Very light wear to wrappers; else a very good copy. First edition of the early experiments with concrete poetry of Grögerová and Hir?al. Bohumila Grögerová (1921-2014), together with her creative companion and life partner Josef Hir?al, was one of the most important representatives of concrete and experimental poetry in Czechoslovakia. They played a key role in organizing the Czech artists and writers working in visual poetry in the 1960s, and also translated numerous foreign practitioners of the field. After the Prague Spring of 1968, the couple was unable to publish original work, although numerous texts appeared in samizdat form and they also continued their career as prolific translators. "Their first experiments in 1960-61 are brought together in the book JOB-BOJ [JOB-FIGHT], which presents not only the liberating, relaxed playfulness of the authors, but also a broad range of experimental techniques. This collection is a kind of catalogue of methods, the experimental nature of which is indicated by their very conceptual definition, working with neologisms but also borrowing from various fields of knowledge, e.g. grammatical, logical, stochastic, syngamic texts, intertexts, objectages, proverbs, musical scores, portraits, micrograms, coacervates (seeking the similarities between biological and linguistic processes) always centring around specific types of models as their distinctive quotations and interpretations" (Piorecky, "Before a poem is written: Czech concrete poetry," 325). With a three-page postscript by the authors, which explains their approach and situates their work within the international sphere of concrete poetry. Overall layout and design by Miroslav Fulín. One of 1500 copies. Scarce in the trade. Bookseller Inventory # 4137
