Item Description: London 1770., 1770. Joe Miller's jests: or, the wits vade-mecum. Being a collectionj of the most brilliant jests, the most excellent bons mots, and most pleasant short tories in the English language; many of them transcribed from the mouth of the facetious gentlemen whose name they bear. To which are added, choice collections of moral sentences, and of the most pointed and truly valuable epigrams in the British tongue; with the names of the authors to such as are known. Most humbly inscribed to those choice spirits of the age, His Majesty's Poet-Laureate, Mr. David Garrick, Mr. The. Cibber, Mr. Justice Bodens's horse, Tom Jones, the most impudent man living, the Rev. Mr. Henley, and Job Baker the kettle-drummer. London: printed for S. Crowder; W. Nicol; and J. Williams, n.d. (ca. 1770). (2)192 pp. + an engraved frontispiece. 12mo, 19th-century calf, gilt, spine gilt, m.e. (minor rubbing)."The fourteenth edition." This most famous of all English jestbooks, traditionally said to have been compiled by John Mottley, was first printed in 1739. The present text derives from the expanded fifth edition of 1742, and is the last of a sequence of 192-page printings which began with the 9th edition of 1747. All editions are very scarce; the ESTC (1990) lists two copies of this one (L; CaOHM), of which the first has been tentatively dated 1772. With an engraved frontispiece. Last page a trifle dusty, but a nice copy. CBEL II, 389 (dated 1769). Bookseller Inventory # B319

Item Description: London 1790., 1790. Joe Miller's jests; or, the wit's vade mecum: a collection of the most brilliant jests, excellent bons mots, and the most pleasant short stories, in the English language: as originally edited by John Mottley, Esq. author of the Life of Peter the Great, &c. With considerable additions. A collection of witty and moral sentences; and the most pointed and truly valuable epigrams and epitaphs; with the names of the authors, to such as are known. Inscribed to the choice spirits of the age. London: printed and published by J. Barker, Dramatic Repository, n.d. (ca. 1790). (2)164 pp. + a woodcut frontispiece. 12mo, early half calf, gilt, spine gilt (spine a bit worn, upper joint weak)."A new edition." The most famous of all early English jestbooks, first published in 1739, and subsequently expanded. There were more than twenty editions in the 18th century; the additions in this one are not really "considerable," but the text does show certain variations. As far as we can determine, this is the first edition to give credit to John Mottley as the compiler, an ascription which has become traditional. The ESTC (1990) lists three copies of this printing (O, WIS; NjP), and gives a date of ca. 1780; given the printer this is probably a bit too early, though the typography is clearly 18th century. With a crude woodcut frontispiece, and a later inserted portrait of "Joe Miller as Teague." A very good copy, with outer edges uncut. CBEL II, 401 (also ca. 1780). Bookseller Inventory # B2794
