About this Item: Merrell Holberton : Natural History Museum, London, first edition, 1998, 1998. Cloth, 4to, 29 cm, 128 pp, plates. From the blurb: "In July 1773, John Abbot, a talented twenty-year-old, left England to spend the rest of his life in Virginia and Georgia, collecting and painting natural history specimens for clients in England, continental Europe and America. For nearly sixty-seven years, until his death in 1840, he worked meticulously to supply collectors and other naturalists with specimens and exquisite paintings and drawings of birds, insects and plants. Abbot's work was in constant demand throughout his life. His output was prolific and his observations were of a very high standard, yet he never sought greater recognition and virtually never published. By contrast, his contemporaries John James Audubon and Alexander Wilson are well known, although Abbot painted many of Audubon's birds long before Audubon began work, and it was Abbot who took Wilson collecting. Abbot's story needs telling and his superb paintings deserve a wide audience - not only because of their artistic merit but for their importance to naturalists and historians. Many of the species figured in these paintings were extinct within forty years of Abbot's death; others are now rare or endangered. Abbot himself predicted such consequences following from the increase in the human population and changes in farming practices." Fine in Fine dustwrapper. Seller Inventory # ABE-28833
