Item Description: Brill. Hardback. Book Condition: new. BRAND NEW, John Seldon on Jewish Marriage Law: The Uxor Hebraica, J.R. Ziskind, This book contains a lengthy introduction, translation and commentary on John Selden's "Uxor Hebraica," Selden was a seventeenth century Christian talmudist, classicist, legal historian and member of the British parliament who wrote extensively on a wide variety of subjects including seven books, all in Latin, of various aspects of Jewish Law. "Uxor Hebraica" is an exhaustive treatment of Jewish marriage law. Among the subjects treated are incest (including a unique discussion of the Karaite rules), levirate, the marriage contract and ceremonies and divorce. Selden extensively used the Hebrew Bible, its ancient and later translations, the Talmud, and especially Maimonides' "Mishneh Torah," He widened his discussion by including comparative material from the New Testament, church fathers, Greece and Rome, Islam, plus usages from Ethiopia, Russia, Byzantium and medieval Europe. Although written without polemic, the work is clearly related to the religious controversies of the day. Bookseller Inventory # B9789004092372

Item Description: London : Printed for Jacob Tonson, 1696. Hardcover. Book Condition: Used: Very Good. 2nd. [10], 192, [1] pages. Second edition of Seldon's posthumous work. Original Cambridge style calf, raised bands, modern red leather spine label. Rehinged and rejointed, scattered foxing, bookplates. A very good copy. The lawyer, politician and antiquarian John Selden made his name as an expert on the ancient laws of England, though he was equally at home with classical and Judaic studies: Grotius described him as ?the glory of the English nation?, and his advice was sought on all manner of legal and moral problems from tithes to cross-dressing. This collection of his remarks on many topics was compiled by his amanuensis Richard Milward and first published in 1689. Samuel Weller Singer says of the book in the 1847 edition, ?it is impossible to open it without finding some important fact or discussion, something practically useful and applicable to the business of life.?. Item Description: London : Printed, for Thomas Basset and Richard Chiswell, 1683. Hardcover. Book Condition: Used: Good. Folio. Contemporary leather, rebacked in early 20th century leather, red leather spine label. Lacks portrait. Rubbing to edges and joints. Marginal soiling and browning. Contents: "The first entitled, Jani anglorum facies altera, rendered into English with large notes thereupon, by Redman Westcot. The second, England's epinomis. The third, of the original of Ecclesiastical jurisdictions of testaments. The fourth, of the disposition or administration of intestate goods. The three last never before extant." Selden is regarded as Englandâ??s first legal historian. Influenced by the humanist movement spilling over from the Continent, Selden investigated the past to inform his understanding of the present. He consulted contemporary primary sources and read them closely, exemplifying the shift from medieval antiquarianism to a more modern approach to history. Jani Anglorum Facie Altera (The Back-face of the English Janus) and England's Epinomis, an allusion to a dialogue in the style of Plato. In addition to being among the first works of Selden's career, they are also notable for being among his first efforts as a historian. While both discuss early English governance and laws, Jani Anglorum offers Selden's vision of the English constitution as a mixed monarchy. For Selden, this meant a state with shared sovereignty between monarch, nobles, clergy, and freemen - a provocative position to the absolutist Stuart kings. This is an oversized or heavy book, that requires additional postage for international delivery outside the US. Bookseller Inventory # 1706050022
