ALDEN, John Richard. John Stuart and the Southern Colonial Frontier: A Study of Indian Relations, War Trade, and Land Problems in the Southern Wilderness, 1754-1775. Ann Arbor, MI: The University of Michigan Press, 1944. 1st ed. xiv, 384 pp. Maps, folding map in rear pocket. Orig. blindstamped cloth. A near fine copy. John Stuart was the superintendent for the southern district of the British Indian Department from 1761 to 1779. His role was to help England and its colonies sort out their relations with the southern Indians and prevent outbreaks like Pontiac's Rebellion of 1763. So successful was Stuart that when the Revolution broke out most Indians in his district supported the British.
