Item Description: Western Producer Book Service, Saskatchewan, 1972. Brown Boards. Book Condition: Good. No Jacket. Fourth Printing. This is a heavy book and extra postage will be requested to all destinations outside of the United Kingdom. This book is fitted with a removable, clearcover, dustwrapper film. No dustjacket. There is some minor bumping and scuffing to the top and bottom of the spine and a little light wear to the outer corners of the boards. Spine is ever so slightly out of shape. Previous owner's name to the front free endpaper. Foreword reads,Three main reasons motivated this work. First, there was a sincere admiration for the Negro rancher who so completely captured the pioneer hearts. Then was a hope that the story of John Ware's career, clearly a success story, might carry the bigger one about ranching on the western range during his lifetime. And, finally, the author would wish to proclaim a conviction that present-day society, with some silly and shameful prejudices, needs the story surrounding the big, powerful, skilful and generous colored cowboy. It is to the everlasting credit of the early West that John Ware could win success and such unstinted respect. Being illiterate, John Ware left no personal records to help a biographer. Fortunately, the part of the book dealing with the rise of the ranching industry on Western Canadian soil can be supported reasonably well by records; but for the principal part of the narrative of John Ware, the author was obliged to go direct to the people who knew him. Fortunately, the pioneers still with us have good memories. Grant MacEwan. Size: 6 Inches Wide By 9 Inches Long. Hardback. Bookseller Inventory # 005315

Item Description: The Institute of Applied Art, Alberta, Canada, 1967. Hardcover. Book Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. John Ware's Cow Country, MacEwan, Grant. Published by The Institute of Applied Art.1967. Red/brown cloth boards; black front and spine titles. slight toning of pages; otherwise fine. Dust jacket is taped repaired with chips to top of spine. Volume is signed on the title page and signed on the free endpaper: With Best Wishes, Grant MacEwan. Above this inscription are signed names of four members of the Ware Family: A. Ware; Mildred Ware; R.L. Mare And Janet (Nettie) Ware. It is assumed that these signatures were obtained on March 11, 1973 at a honorary 80th birthday event held for John Ware's daughter Janet (Nettie) Ware in Vulcan, Alberta. This date and place are inked on free endpaper; a newspaper clipping about this event is laid in. This book has significant historical value. The author, Grant MacEwan, OC AOE (1902-2000) was a farmer, Professor at the University of Saskatchewan, Dean of Agriculture at the University of Manitoba, the 28th Mayor of Calgary and both a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) and the ninth Lieutenant Governor of Alberta, Canada. John Ware (c. 1845 ¿ 12 September 1905) was an African-American cowboy best remembered for his ability to ride and train horses and for bringing the first cattle to Southern Alberta in 1882, helping to create that province's important ranching industry. Ware was born into slavery in South Carolina. After the American Civil War he left the Carolinas for Texas where he learned the skills of a rancher and became a cowboy. Ware's great stature and dedication to hard work made him a natural and allowed him to work his way up to Canada driving cattle from Texas to Montana and then into the great plains that would eventually become Alberta.
