Book First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. First printing. A western novel memorable in large measure as the source for Nicholas Ray's famously overheated film -- a truly weird and compulsively watchable cult classic which pits Joan Crawford against Mercedes McCambridge, ostensibly as rivals for the affections of the laconic title character (played by Sterling Hayden) but really just because they hate each other. The book was obviously destined for the screen from the get go, it is even dedicated to Crawford! The first screenplay by Chanslor was rewritten by Philip Yordan and Ray, the former ending up with sole screenplay credit. Pulp paper stock considerably edge browned, VG entirely free of any former owner marking. Dust wrapper with little wear and tiny chipping at spine ends, the $2.50 publication price intact to jacket flap.

Hard Cover. Dust Jacket Condition: Dust Jacket. First Edition. First UK Edition. A bookseller's ticket on the front paste-down, a couple of minor bumps to the boards and some light foxing to the page edges overall a nice VG book. The very rare pictorial D/W is VG indeed and is not price-clipped and is pretty much complete. There is a touch of rubbing to the extremities and a short closed tear with associated creasing to to the back panel. The basis for the ground-breaking, famously over-heated Republic Pictures movie of the same name starring Joan Crawford as Vienna, Sterling Hayden as Johnny 'Guitar' Logan, Mercedes McCambridge as Emma Small, Scott Brady as Dancin' Kid, Ernest Borgnine as Bart Lonergan and directed by Nicholas Ray. This, the British first edition, is significantly rarer than its US counterpart and is seldom seen in D/W.

First Edition. First Edition. Association copy, INSCRIBED by Roy Chanslor to film director Nicholas Ray on the front endpaper: "To Nick Ray / For a very happy and fruitful association! / Roy." The inscription refers to Ray's film version of Chanslor's book, one of the strangest and most important Westerns ever committed to celluloid, and a critical high spot for Joan Crawford (to whom the book is dedicated). The film rights to the novel were purchased prior to publication, and Chanslor finished the first draft of the screenplay adaptation on June 10, 1953, just a few weeks after publication of the book. The film, which also starred Sterling Hayden and Mercedes McCaimbridge, was released in 1954. The best association imaginable between this key author of post-traditional Western fiction and the film director who famously brought that author's sensibilities into a bold new visual context. Very Good in a Very Good plus dust jacket. Front hinge professionally repaired, some wear to the extremities, and the usual toning to the page edges. Jacket is lightly rubbed at the folds, with a few short closed tears, otherwise quite nice.
