Publisher's one-half brown leather over dark brown pebble-cloth boards, spine with five raised bands, lettered in gilt in two compartments and with elaborate gilt decorations in the other four compartments, front cover is ornately lettered in gilt and with gilt rules, all board edges are beveled, all page edges in rich gilt, thick sm 4to. The first edition of this work was published in 1872, this set was published in 1875. Each volume has an essay on evolution that appears at the end of the work: volume I has "An Exposition of the Development Hypothesis as Maintained by Charles Darwin, Thomas Henry Huxley, Alfred Russel Wallace, Herbert Spencer and the New School of Naturalists" by Prof. Edward L. Youmans M.D., and volume 2 has "A Criticism of the Development Hypothesis as Held by Charles Darwin, Thomas Henry Huxley, Alfred Russel Wallace, Herbert Spencer and the New School of Naturalists" by Rev. Julius H. Seelye. Both of these essays take an anti-Darwinian view. There are also 7 pages of reviews of the Goodrich set, by eminent professors and writers, at the end of volume 2. Original half gilt-stamped black morocco over gilt-stamped textured maroon cloth, all-edges gilt; stained with heavily rubbed extremities. Ownership ink signature of Willie E. Ryan of Louisville, Ky. Very good. Early printing of this splendid collection of engravings showing all forms of animals from all over the world. This is an excellent example of nineteenth century illustration of the order of biology and how it relates to man and their shared environments. S. G. Goodrich (1793-1860), born in Connecticut and largely self-educated, he became a bookseller and publisher in Hartford. They are basically square, but the entire book has a bow and should spend some time in a press. They ar rubbed at the edges and most corners are through at the tips. The rubbing shows at the ends of the spine and there are splits at the edge of the back strip near the top on volume II. The front hinge of volume I is starting at he top inch. The blind stamped boards are covered with dark brown cloth with bright, gold titles on the spine and front. They are extensively illustrated with black & white drawings including many full page plates, The end papers and page edges are marbled. Volume I has 680 pages plus appendix and volume II has 682 pages plus appendix and ads. This listing comes with a large manila envelope of ephemera consisting mainly of period magazine and newspaper articles of various fauna, but also including several black & white plates. Nearly 1550 engravings throughout 2 volumes. Gilt page edges on all three edges. Leather covers with gilt lettering and ruling to covers and gilt lettering and decoration on spine. Light scuffing and wear to edges of both volumes. Slight loss to tops of spines of both volumes. Loss at top of front spine . Bindings straight, square and secure; interiors bright clean and unmarked. **** This is a popular history of the animal world, profusely illustrted and sure to delight for many years.**** A very pretty set.
