Item Description: New York: Johnson & Ward, 1865., 1865. Folio (18 x 14 4/8 inches). Additional engraved title-page, 66 hand-colored maps (33 are double-page) plus insets and other small maps, all on 61 map-sheets, 2 hand-colored double-page plates, showing the Mountains and Rivers of the world, and flags from various nations, one hand-colored time table plate, 12 hand-colored map charts, several wood-engraved vignettes (a bit browned throughout). Original publisher's red morocco elaborately decorated in gilt and black, all edges gilt (a bit worn with minor loss to the head and foot of the spine and the corners). Provenance: with the blind library stamp of William Shoemaker III on the front free endpaper and preliminaries. An important atlas, and an attractive copy, issued at the close of the Civil War, first published in 1860 when Johnson acquired the copyright to fellow mapmaker Colton's maps of the world, and published in revised editions until 1885. With a "To the Subscribers to our New Atlas" loosely inserted: "In order to avoid the expense of purchasing any other Map or Atlas for MANY YEARS, we, the undersigned, - publishers of Johnson's New Illustrated Atlas - have been to the cost and trouble of having inserted EXTRA GUARDS between the Maps in the Atlas, so that any person with a little MUCILAGE or PASTE can easily introduce new MAPS from time to time, without the least detriment to the work.
