Very good first edition book in very good dust jacket.  Signed by the author on the title page.  Tan cloth covered boards with gilt text and graphics on spine.  Board edges are faded.  Front board panel has light 1/2" by 1/4" stain.  Faint 1/2" by 3" water stain on lower left corner of front panel carrying over to lower edge of board spine; does not appear to effect inside paste-down or pages.  Creasing on edges at head and tail of board spine. Small bump on lower right front fore-edge corner.  Foxing beginning on front and back paste-downs and end papers.  Previous owner's name on front free end paper otherwise book is internally clean and text block is sound.  Dust jacket is a bit soiled overall.  Sunned around edges and folds more so on spine which is also stained.  Fore-edge and spine folds are creased and rubbed.  Upper right fore-edge corner on front panel has 1" J-shaped closed tear along the fold.  Edges along head and tail of jacket spine are creased; corners are rubbed.  Minimal loss on tips at all fore-edge corners.  Not price clipped.  Please use close-up option for best inspection.  Additional photos available at your request. Letter by David McCullough dated May 7, 1968- the year of his first book publication- on his stationery from White Plains, NY. The letter is about five-inches by eight-inches. The contents of the letter include a response to someone writing to him about the Johnson publication of "History of the Johnstown Flood" . The book is also included with the letter. McCullough advises the person " not to take all of it too seriously", because "the Johnson book includes "a good deal of material that's just not so". He does go on to comment on how he researched his book. The letter has a light fold in the middle The book is in brown cloth and has rubbing to cloth. The book is not signed. Signed by Author(s).
