About this Item: Self Published c. 2002, U. S. A., 2002. Paperback. Condition: Fine. Paperback. Inscribed & signed by author on title page. Binding and contents are almost like new. ; 8-3/8" Tall, v + 53pp. PAPER COVERS. Cover is a little lighter than posterboard. INSCRIBED AND SIGNED BY AUTHOR on title page (To my good friend Richard G. Orms with whom we have mutual acquaintances in the History of the Johnstown Flood, from Tom Townsend) . BIOGRAPHY. Although Edward Young Townsend was not present when the Johnstown Flood, the worst flood in American history, occurred, he arrived in Johnstown as soon as possible thereafter and immediately began work reconstructing the Cambria Iron Company's plants and helping the surviving residents of Johnstown. He immediately formed cleanup crews, not only for the company property but also for the whole valley and town of Johnstown. In a matter of weeks, Townsend and his staff had the plants back in operation, providing employment for the devastated workers in Johnstown. Emergency housing consisted of tents and undamaged houses up the sides of the valley. For may people, Townsend provided financial aid, both from the company and from his own pocket. " The book was written by his great-grandson to honor an Unsung Hero. Although the 8 pages of b/w photos, plus a map, are about the great flood, most of the book is a biography. Frontispiece portrait. Seller Inventory # 39237

About this Item: N.p., N.p., 1889. Hardcover. Small 8vo. Original green cloth, gilt. 240pp. Illustrations, map. Very good. Quite minor bit of edgewear. Tight and attractive unknown edition (not ascertainable) of this bibliographically-challenged odd duck, which lists neither publisher nor city of publication nor year of publication -- but certainly published shortly after the May 31, 1889 catastrophe near central Pennsylvania. The subtitle tells it all: "A Thriving City of 30,000 Inhabitants and Many Great Industrial Establishments Nearly Wiped from Earth. Many Thousands Drowned or Burned to Death. Property Worth Many Millions of Dollars Destroyed. An Avalanche of Water Sweeps Down the Conemaugh Valley Destroying Everything in Its Descent. A Blockade of Wrecks of Houses, Timber, Etc., at the Railroad Bridge. Miraculous Escapes and Rescues; Whole Families Annihilated. The Wonderful Benevolence of the American People. Relief Organizations Everywhere. Money, Food, Clothing and Furniture Lavishly Contributed. General Hastings in Command in Johnstown." Ownership signature on front pastedown of noted Lincoln and Civil War scholar ARNOLD F. GATES (1914-93) dated 7-17-37. Best of all is a unique autograph addition: Tipped to the front flyleaf is a pictorial 3" X 4" "From the Library of" bookplate signed in black ballpoint by FRANK SHOMO (1889-1997), who adds below his signature the infamous date of "2-20-1889." Shomo was one of the very last survivors of the flood, living to the ripe old age of 108. Signed in the 1990s but still with a firm hand. A choice copy. Seller Inventory # 33272

About this Item: Photo album containing original photographs of the aftermath of the Johnstown flood. Limp morocco covers, stitched linen leaves with photos laid on. The album contains 49 photos. In very good condition with some wear to the covers. The Johnstown Flood occurred on May 31, 1889, after the catastrophic failure of the South Fork Dam on the Little Conemaugh River 14 miles upstream of the town of Johnstown, Pennsylvania. The dam broke after several days of extremely heavy rainfall, releasing 16 million tons from the reservoir. With a volumetric flow rate that temporarily equaled that of the Mississippi River, the flood killed 2,209 people and caused US$17 million of damage. The American Red Cross, led by Clara Barton and with 50 volunteers, undertook a major disaster relief effort. Support for victims came from all over the United States and 18 foreign countries. After the flood, survivors suffered a series of legal defeats in their attempts to recover damages from the dam's owners. Public indignation at that failure prompted the development in American law changing a fault-based regime to strict liability. Seller Inventory # 38047
