Item Description: Harper Collins India, 2005. Softcover. Book Condition: New. First edition. Summary Of The Book Jonathan Livingston Seagull, first published in 1970, is a short novel about a seagull named Jonathan Livingston. The first part of the book shows that unlike other birds, Jonathan is bored of just fighting for food. He wishes to learn all there is to flying, and manages to dive at a speed of two hundred miles per hour. He becomes excited as he is the fastest seagull ever. However, the other birds say that he is recklessly irresponsible and therefore should be banished from the flock. Jonathan doesn`t lose his passion for flying, and continues to practice his skills. One day, he meets two other seagulls who tell him about a wonderful place where all gulls love to fly. Jonathan becomes friendly with a different group of seagulls and befriends the wisest seagull, who guides him to fly in a way that would instantaneously allow him to reach any part of the universe. In the next part of Jonathan Livingston Seagull, the protagonist decides to return to his original flock and teach his skills to other seagulls who have been outlawed by their flocks. He also spreads the message of love. Will his students be able to learn from their master? Will the other seagulls accept what he has become and learn from him? Jonathan Livingston Seagull is filled with illustrations by Russell Munson. After a plane crash in 2012, Bach wrote the fourth and last part of Jonathan Livingston Seagull. Within two years of its publication, more than a million copies had been printed. It also reached the No.1 spot on the New York Times bestseller list, and stayed there for 38 weeks. It is the bestselling novel in America as per the Publishers Weekly list. A movie of the same name was also made. In 1973, actor Richard Harris won a Grammy for the audiobook. Printed Pages: 96. Item Description: The Macmillan Company, New York, NY, 1970. Hardcover. Book Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. Russell Munson, Photographer (illustrator). 1st Edition. The Macmillan Company, New York. 1970. Hardcover. 20th Printing by line number. Book is tight, square, and unmarked. Book Condition: Near Fine: slight dust soiling of top board edges. DJ: Good +; NOT price clipped; light wear to spine edges and tip covers. Blue cloth boards with white lettering on spine and embossed seagull on boards. Pictorial end papers. 93 pp 8vo. This is the story of a young seagull with big ambitions. He pushes himself to fly at tremendous speeds, eventually reaching a higher plane of perfection. Later, he returns to his flock to teach the ambitious among them what he knows. In Part I, he defies his parents and spends all his time practicing flying. He repudiates their belief that a seagull's sole purpose is to eat and instead studies the mechanics of flight. He's banished because of this. In Part II, he reaches a higher plane of existence, where he studies with the elder gull Chiang, who teaches him the secrets to "perfect speed." In Part III, he returns to his flock to teach them what he has learned. A classic story of flight and self-improvement. A clean and very presentable copy in a Brodart mylar jacket. Item Description: Avon, 1973. Soft cover. Book Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. Twenty-Ninth printing. A clean, unmarked and tight copy. "Most gulls don't bother to learn more than the simplest facts of flight--how to get from shore to food and back again," writes author Richard Bach in this allegory about a unique bird named Jonathan Livingston Seagull. "For most gulls it is not flying that matters, but eating. For this gull, though, it was not eating that mattered, but flight." Flight is indeed the metaphor that makes the story soar. Ultimately this is a fable about the importance of seeking a higher purpose in life, even if your flock, tribe, or neighborhood finds your ambition threatening. (At one point our beloved gull is even banished from his flock.) By not compromising his higher vision, Jonathan gets the ultimate payoff: transcendence. Ultimately, he learns the meaning of love and kindness. The dreamy seagull photographs by Russell Munson provide just the right illustrations--although the overall packaging does seem a bit dated (keep in mind that it was first published in 1970). Nonetheless, this is a spirituality classic, and an especially engaging parable for adolescents. --Gail Hudson. Bookseller Inventory # 007281
