About this Item: Robert Ballou, New York, 1933. Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: No DJ. First Edition. New York: Robert Ballou, 1933. First Edition. Very Good/No DJ. First, limited edition of 350. Signed by Ulmann and Peterkin on the limitation page. All ninety (90) plates present, all original glassine tissue guards present. An additional print, depicting Gullah women in a foot washing service (page 123 duplicate), is laid in and is additionally signed by Ulmann. This is the only copy I have seen where the additional print is of the famous foot washing image, easily one of the finest in the book. This image was used as the cover photo for a biography of Ulmann called The Darkness and the Light (1974). Like many copies of this book, there was some water staining to the top of the spine and splash marks on the front board. This copy has been professionally touched up so that the boards are a strong VG+, the water spots almost invisible. The spine lettering is nice and clear (all original gilt). Lacking the plain cardboard slipcase. The contents of the book have minor edge foxing to about 1/3 of the pages, not touching the actual image. The additional plate is signed by Ulmann and has edge chips and tears caused by the plate sticking out from the book, since it was not bound in. The signed additional plate is absolutely original to the book, offsetting from the image (strangely attractive) is seen on the blanks at the front of the book, No soiling to the rough edge textblock (top edge gilt), which suggests that this book, aside from the original water splash, has been very well cared for. Binding is rock solid, not a hint of wear. The entire production is housed in a custom 3/4 morocco leather solander box with a separate chemise for the print. Signed By the Artist and Author. About this Item: Clarendon Press, Oxford, 1959. Cloth. Condition: Very Good. First Edition. xxvi, [2], 352 pp., colour frontispiece + 109 plates of which some are folding & 5 in colour, 258 figures in text, half-title, contribution by Oleg Grabar, index. Copy clean and in perfect condition. Khirbat Al Mafjar is a deserted Umayyad palace lying about a mile and a half from Al-Khalil in the Jordan Valley. R. Hamilton, the keeper of the Department of Antiquities in the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford, was also a Director of Antiquities in Palestine during British Mandate. He conducted several explorations at the site investigating the variety of materials used and the wealth of detail in construction and ornament which time and chance had preserved. The excavations at Khirbat Al Mafjar, undertaken between 1934 and 1949, revealed the extent and nature of the buildings which had only been investigated in the broadest way in the previous sixty years. Hamilton considers the ruins of Khirbat Al Mafjar "among the richest of available sources for the secular architecture of Palestine at a critical and fleeting moment: a moment when the reviving stimulus of religion and empire, of wealth and passionate will, under the Umayyad Caliphs seemed about to transform, by a new synthesis of Greek and Asiatic genius, the millennial art of Hellenistic Syria. As it happened, the fall of the Umayyads in AD 750 cut all that short; but not before the first architectural experiments of the Muslim Empire had revealed the creative and assimilative powers and the technical capacity that existed". (Preface). Bibliographic reference: Creswell 429. Size: 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall. Seller Inventory # 002582

About this Item: Cassell, Petter, Galpin & Co c. 1889, London, 1889. Hardcover. All parts bound in one volume Half folio (approximately 10 x 14 inches exclusive of margins). original scarlet padded morocco, heavy gilt decorations, spine with raised bands, extra gilt, lettered in gilt, all edges gilt, marbled endpapers. Illustrated with 120 tinted lithographs by Louis Haghe from original drawings by David Roberts. (all present.) Plates slightly larger (32 x 24 cm) than in the earlier quarto edition and are also identified outside the image. David Roberts, R.A. (24 October 1796 Ð 25 November 1864) was a Scottish painter. He is especially known for a prolific series of detailed lithograph prints of Egypt and the Near East that he produced from sketches he made during long tours of the region (1838Ð1840). These and his large oil paintings of similar subjects made him a prominent Orientalist painter. He was elected as a Royal Academician in 1841.In 1838, Roberts embarked on a journey that would shape Europe's perception of the Middle East and then Roberts worked with lithographer Louis Haghe from 1842 to 1849 to produce the lavishly illustrated plates of the Sketches in the Holy Land and Syria, 1842Ð1849 and Egypt & Nubia series. He funded the work through advance subscriptions which he solicited directly. The scenery and monuments of Egypt and Holy Land were fashionable but had hitherto been hardly touched by British artists, and so Roberts quickly accumulated 400 subscription commitments, with Queen Victoria being subscriber No. 1. Her complete set is still in the Royal Collection. The timing of publication just before photographs of the sites became available proved fortuitous. [. Spine ends, edges and corner a little rubbed, spine a tad darkened (gilt very bright), preliminary and terminal leaves with some brown spotting rarely affecting the image area of the plates. Asia; oder, Genaue und gründliche Beschreibung des: Dapper, Olfert

About this Item: Johann Hofmann, Nurenberg, 1688. Hardcover. Condition: poor. 4to. [1] 200 [4] + 400 [8] pp. Bound in leather with gold lettering on spine. Raised bands on spine. Illustrated with 38 (complete in 39) copper - engraved plates and maps. Double-paged 21, (of which 2 were are hand-colored.) Frontispiece and 8 full page plates, (of which one has extra folds.) Seven double-page copper - engraved maps, (3 of which have extra folds) In addition there are 34 in page text engravings, (4 of which are crudely hand-colored.) This is a copy of the German translation by Jacob von Meursen, who engraved the copperplates, which were compiled and modified from earlier printed works. Text in double column. The many illustrations are truly gorgeous, depicting: landscapes, architecture, desert scenes, religious and historical events and much more, making this a famous and well known work. Olfert Dapper (1635 - 1689) was a Dutch physician, writer and expert on Africa. He was born in Amsterdam around 1635. In May 1658, he enrolled at Utrecht University and two years later was signing himself "doctor medicinæ," although there is no evidence that he ever received any medical training. In 1663, he published a historical description of Amsterdam. In 1665 he published a Dutch translation of the works of Herodotus. With the increased interest in exploration and foreign cultures, a flourishing trade in travel books developed in Holland in the mid 17th Century. Following this trend, Dapper was just over thirty when he embarked on the geographic and ethnographic research that was to occupy him for the rest of his life. He threw himself into a vast undertaking, tackling first Africa (1668), then China (1670), Persia (1672) and the Middle East (1680). His books became well known in his own time, with translations rapidly appearing in English, French and German. In 1983 a museum devoted to him was opened in Paris, Musée Dapper. Dapper never went to the exotic destinations about which he wrote. Largely due to his utilization of the accounts of Jesuit missionaries and explorers, Dapper steered clear from making value judgments about the societies he described. He avoided ethnocentric connotations and became the first person to adopt an interdisciplinary approach, weaving together the separate threads of geography, economics, politics, medicine, social life and customs. Unlike some of his contemporaries, Dapper produced a genuine work for posterity, not just a compendium of exotic curiosities. Head and foot of spine missing, cracking to spine, front and rear boards detached but present. 1 full page plate missing. Browning, foxing and water staining throughout, but text and illustrations are mostly unaffected. Marginal pencil marks atop a number of the plates, not effecting illustrations. Some repairs with white binders tape on the verso of the double page fold out map of Terra Sancta, (The Holy Land) and to some of the double-page fold out plates. Exterior in poor, interior in overall fair condition. Seller Inventory # 18960

First Edition. 8vo; 251pp, with 75 photographs on double-sided plates, including frontispiece; original blue cloth, gilt spine, edges faded about 1/8 in, endpapers a bit aged toned, jacket chipped along all edges rubbed ("E" in Peterkin missing on spine) with creases on both front panel, very good in used jacket.Julia Mood Peterkin (1880-1961), South Carolina native, lived on her husband's two-thousand acre plantation and also had a summer home at Murrell's Inlet, a coastal village. She wrote, with realism and dignity, plantation stories and stories of the Gullah African American tenant farmers of the Sea Islands and coastal regions. She was a sympathetic and outstanding commentator of the lives of this vanishing black culture. Doris Ulmann (1882-1934) was a well-respected photographer of the period who specialized in portraying the people of the "Southern Highlands" Appalachia and the coastal blacks Peterkin wrote about. Ulman's photographs of now vanished worlds capture her subjects with respect, insight, and grace and a transcendent quality which embodies the beauty and mystery of human experience. ROLL, JORDAN ROLL is a non-fiction work which portrays the Gullah in a perfect artistic blend of text and picture. American Woman Writers III, pp. 373-374. About this Item: Bath, printed and sold by Meyler and Son … and in London by Hatchard, 1810. 4to. Modern calf-backed marbled boards, red morocco lettering-piece; pp. 47, 5 (notes), engraved map as frontispiece (lightly cropped, as usual); title-page with repair to torn corner and a few minor flaws, occasional light spotting; a good copy of a great rarity. First edition of this travel account by an unsung hero of early travel on the Arabian peninsula. Ulrich Jasper Seetzen (1767-1811) was a German physician, scientist, orientalist and traveler, who left Germany in 1802. He travelled overland to Istanbul, through Anatolia to the Levant where he studied Arabic. During the first leg of the journey described in this volume Seetzen was accompanied by an Armenian named Ibrahim, who was formerly in the service of Jezzar, Pasha of Akko. They began their journey from Damascus on 12 December 1805 to Lahja, Gerat and Hauran, eventually returning to Damascus. Seetzen's second journey was undertaken alone, disguised as an Arab beggar. He investigated the surroundings of the Dead Sea, where Seetzen commenced another journey to Rasheia, Baniass, Jerrash, Karrak and other places en route. Seetzen was the first European to examine the lake and the deepest depression on Earth. Later he went to Mecca, where he made drawings of the Holy places, converted to Islam and, in the Hadhramaut, he decided to travel to Muscat, when he was poisoned by his guides on orders from the imam of Sana'a. This book is the first publication of any of his exploits, and was instigated by Sir Joseph Banks. In the 1850s appeared all his remaining travelogues in German. They were never translated. Not in Atabey or Blackmer. The last copy to appear at auction was sold in 1998 for just under £1100. Seller Inventory # 2099148
