Item Description: J. & J. Harper, New York, 1832. Richard (1804?34) and John (1807?39) Lander were commissioned by the British Colonial Office to complete what had been left undone by the Clapperton expedition to the Niger River. Richard had been one of the survivors of the Clapperton debacle and was a veteran explorer and traveller. The Landers were very successful: They mapped the Niger from its source to where it emptied into the Bight of Benin. First American edition, issued the same year as the London edition. The plates and maps are a mix of wood and steel engravings, stipple engravings, etc., signed variously by American engravers J. Harris, E. Prudhomme, and D. R. Harrison. In series: "Harper's family library," as its volumes XXXV and XXXVI (i.e., 35 & 36). A Harper's stereotype edition. 12mo. 2 vols. I: [8 (ads)] ff., frontis., 384 pp., 2 maps (one fold.). II: 337 pp., frontis., 3 plts. Howego, II, L10; American Imprints 13302. Publisher's tan cloth printed with publishing information on front cover and ads for other volumes in the Harper Family Library series on the back. Ex?social club library: 19th-century bookplate, call number on endpaper, pressure-stamp on title-page, no other markings. Strips of black tape on spines and on to the boards. Top of spines pulled with loss of cloth; joints (outside) cracked but bindings holding nicely. Binding lightly dustsoiled. Folding map torn and repaired. Bookseller Inventory # 28864

Item Description: 1833. First edition. 3 vols. Large folding & one other map, 2 portrait frontispieces & 5 plates, with further illustrations in the text. 16mo. Modern quarter morocco. lxiv, 272; vii, [1], 321; vii, [1], 354, [1]pp. London, John Murray, 1832 & Having previously travelled through the Cape Colony with General Sir Wm. Colebrooke, Richard Lander offered his services to Lieut. Clapperton and remained with him until his death in 1827. Lander returned to England with Clapperton's papers, but before long was en route for West Africa once again, this time with the aim of tracing the course of the Niger. With his wife provided with a government annuity of 100 pounds per year during his absence, and with an additional 100 guineas promised to Lander himself on his return, he set out with his younger brother from Portsmouth for Cape Coast Castle in January 1830. They reached the Niger itself in June at Boussa where Mungo Park had died, and began their great journey by travelling one hundred miles up stream. It took the expedition two months to return to their starting point, before they began the dangerous voyage to the ocean. In the following months they were held to ransom and their expedition supplies were plundered but by 1st December they were in Fernando Po having reached the mouth of the great river in the Bight of Biafra. On their return to England the brothers Lander were greeted with popular acclaim and Richard Lander became the first recipient of the Royal Geographical Society's gold medal. John Murray offered one thousand guineas to the brothers for their journals which were edited by Lieut. Belcher of the Royal Navy. Bookseller Inventory # 226263
