Excerpt from The Journal of Horticulture, Cottage Gardener, and Country Gentleman, 1864, Vol. 6: A Magazine of Gardening, Rural and Domestic Economy, Botany and Natural History The only error that we see worth noting is that made by our own carelessness or a slight slip of the engraver, by which the border, as shown on the south side of fig. 2, is higher than it is. As far as we recollect, it will scarcely be two-thirds of the height there shown, and we mention this just to show that the border made above the natural soil was even more shallow than is there represented. About this Item: Forgotten Books, 2017. Paperback. Condition: New. Language: English . Brand New Book ***** Print on Demand *****. Excerpt from The Journal of Horticulture, Cottage Gardener, Country Gentleman, Bee-Keeper and Poultry Chronicle, Vol. 20: A Journal of Gardening, Rural and Domestic Economy, Botany, and Natural History But with the thought of the increased brain-work in England comes also the thought of the increased need of wholesome recreation. England is further and further receding from the merrie England of olden time, which meant to a great degree holiday-making - May-pole dancing, Christmas and Twelfth-night romping, and keeping all the many holidays of the old calendar. Now it is work ing England, and he who provides a wholesome recreation for his fellows in this brain-exhausting age is a public benefactor. But nothing gives such a change and benefit to men, to those, especially in populous cities pent, as a glimpse of Nature. A recent writer in the Saturday Review says well In the way of recreation one view of Hampstead Heath is worth whole volumes of tropical travel: and a linnet in a Surrey hedge gives a fresher idea of Nature s charms than all the stuffed specimens in the zoological department of the British Museum. But no object to pursue daily and constantly equals horticul ture for providing wholesome recreation, and, let me add, for promoting good temper. Wonderfully fascinating is it. Deny a garden yet he who loves one will not be beaten. Thus we all remember Picciola, or the Prison Flower, and he who watched it with intense delight as it un folded itself from its first pair of leaves to its full ?owering. Then there is Dickens s story of the boy, crippled and bed ridden, who was devoted to his plant in the broken jug in. The window yes, and what comfort it gave him. About this Item: Forgotten Books, 2017. Paperback. Condition: New. Language: English . Brand New Book ***** Print on Demand *****. Excerpt from The Journal of Horticulture, Cottage Gardener, and Country Gentleman, 1865, Vol. 33: A Magazine of Gardening, Rural and Domestic Economy, Botany and Natural History As from the description of the high ground at the carriage side of the house, it might be inferred that the mansion stands on low ground, I must conduct the reader to the south side, and there he will see that in addition to the difference of the height of a storey in the ground level, the latter still continues to recede for a distance of 100 yards or more; we then come to a beautiful piece of water, fresh, clear, and sparkling, twenty acres or more in extent, which occupies a position in the valley. There is a well-wooded island in it, and the outline is at suitable places concealed by planting and at others shown, so as to give a natural appearance to a sheet of water, which in such a situation can hardly be too highly valued. A lawn with a few speci men trees sparingly introduced, so as not to impede the view, connects the mansion with the ornamental water. The dressed ground is for the most part on the opposite, or rather the eastern side of the mansion, but there are many interesting walks and corners carved out of the wooded hill, against which the whole reposes. Dimensions: 9.0in. x 6.0in. x 1.0in.Excerpt from The Journal of Horticulture, Cottage Gardener, and Country Gentleman, 1865, Vol. 33: A Magazine of Gardening, Rural and Domestic Economy, Botany and Natural HistoryAs from the description of the high ground at the carriage side of the house, it might be inferred that the mansion stands on low ground, I must conduct the reader to the south side, and there he will see that in addition to the difference of the height of a storey in the ground level, the latter still continues to recede for a distance of 100 yards or more; we then come to a beautiful piece of water, fresh, clear, and sparkling, twenty acres or more in extent, which occupies a position in the valley. About this Item: Forgotten Books, 2017. Paperback. Condition: New. Language: English . Brand New Book ***** Print on Demand *****. Excerpt from The Journal of Horticulture, Cottage Gardener, and Country Gentleman, 1864, Vol. 32: A Magazine of Gardening, Rural and Domestic Economy, Botany and Natural History Another reason is also manifest. All the contributions have been based upon the sound practical knowledge of the respective writers. All have related to subjects of interest to one or more classes Of our readers, and all have had for their aim the improvement of practice or the acquirement Of truth. A third reason is, that even in controversy a spirit of kindness and courtesy has been maintained. All seem to have been animated by the just conviction that an Opponent has as much right to entertain an opinion as he has whom he opposes, and that he need not have his face scratched to make him feel that he is wrong. May these characteristics which have earned for this Journal approbation and success in 1864 be maintained and intensified in 1865; and when this year s days are concluded, and our first Number Of its successor appears, may it bear as its introduction an address as kindly-spirited and truthful from the same friendly heart. About this Item: Forgotten Books, 2017. Paperback. Condition: New. Language: English . Brand New Book ***** Print on Demand *****.Excerpt from The Journal of Horticulture, Cottage Gardener, and Country Gentleman, 1862, Vol. 27: A Journal of Horticulture, Rural and Domestic Economy, Botany and Natural History In that picture the elder form, with pensive reflective face turned upon the background prospect, well impersonates the recent past. That face indicates re?ection gathering wisdom from events bears the impress of regret that more was not accomplished during days gone by, and of sorrow for those taken from us during their continuance. The expression of that face well accords with private regret and sorrow for those irrevocable events; nor is it less expressive of the sorrow of our whole nation for the Leader we have lost - not merely the Leader of a Royal household, but a Leader in all things tending to the improvement of physical and intellectual life. The heart feels relieved, and the eye brightens, as it looks upon the fair, smiling, upraised features of the other and more youthful figure in that picture. Those onward-looking features are indicative of good resolves, and beaming with hope that those resolves will be abundantly fruitful. They are emblematic of the future we are looking towards. We have resolved to be still more useful even than heretofore. In that future are to be fulfilled the promises of fresh aid; in it beneficial discoveries are to be revealed; we are aware of new illustrations to which it will give birth; and in that future the appropriate riches of the International Exhibition will have to be examined and reported. So, we are hopeful, trustful, and powerful, not only because the approaching harvest is plenteous but because our harvestmen are vigorous and well-skilled. Nor do our causes for looking smilingly towards the future end there, because we are well assured that the samples from our gamers will be above an average of excellence and the past gives a guarantee that we shall obtain for them a ready sale.
