About this Item: Leonaur Ltd, 2014. Paperback. Condition: New. Language: English . Brand New Book ***** Print on Demand *****.Two fine accounts of the British at war with Napoleon s French Army in Egypt While there can be no doubt as to the colossal stature of Napoleon Bonaparte in world history, it is equally certain that, despite his genius as a strategist and military tactician, he was a fundamentally flawed character given to embarking on seemingly illogical endeavours-often with disastrous consequences in loss of life-for no realistically achievable gain. His adventure into the Middle East and Egypt (a strategic cul-de-sac) with his Armee d Orient must rank in the forefront of those debacles. Nevertheless, Britain was at war with France and wherever the enemy was to be found it had to be engaged. Indeed, Nelson was able to inflict a decisive naval defeat on the French navy at the Battle of the Nile in 1798, and in 1801 a British force stormed ashore at Abukir Bay to engage French troops in Egypt. On the burning North African sands this force fought the by now abandoned French force (Napoleon had returned to France) inflicting a decisive defeat at Abukir itself, Mandora and finally at Alexandria-though with the loss of General Ralph Abercrombie who was killed in the final battle. This unique Leonaur book contains two essential works on the campaigns in Egypt. The principal piece is an outstanding history and first hand account of this little reported Napoleonic campaign, and the second is an illustrated historical overview by regarded military historian Colonel W. W. Knollys. Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket; our hardbacks are cloth bound and feature gold foil lettering on their spines and fabric head and tail bands. About this Item: LEONAUR. Hardcover. Condition: New. 324 pages. Dimensions: 8.5in. x 5.5in. x 0.9in.Two fine accounts of the British at war with Napoleons French Army in Egypt While there can be no doubt as to the colossal stature of Napoleon Bonaparte in world history, it is equally certain that, despite his genius as a strategist and military tactician, he was a fundamentally flawed character given to embarking on seemingly illogical endeavours-often with disastrous consequences in loss of life-for no realistically achievable gain. His adventure into the Middle East and Egypt (a strategic cul-de-sac) with his Armee dOrient must rank in the forefront of those debacles. W. Knollys. Excerpt from Journal of the Late Campaign in Egypt: Including Descriptions of That Country, and of Gibraltar, Minorca, Malta, Marmorice, and Macri; With an Appendix; Containing Official Papers and Documents That his statements of facts are correct, he trusts will not be called in question, as they have received the approbation of those, who were some of the principal actors in the scenes recorded: for every thing else he must rely on the candour of the reader. All he aims to give is a simple narrative of the events that occurred, from the 94th of October 1800, the day on which sailing orders arrived at Gibraltar, to the final conquest of Egypt; unadorned with the beauties of composition, or elegance of style. To discuss the propriety of measures, reason on the consequences of incidents, and bestow praise Where so much well-earned praise is unques tionably due, would be in him not merely an invidious task, but would deservedly expose him to the censure of presumption. From this, therefore, he has refrained, leaving the facts to speak for themselves; and, not aspiring to the. Praise of an historian, he has preferred the Journal form, as more consonant with his views. Perhaps, however, the reader will not censure him severely, if he occasionally step out of this track for a few moments, brie?y to describe what he has seen, or to relate the feelings sug gested to his mind on the spot as they arose. Of places often visited, and on which the pens of various travellers have been copiously employed, he has said but little: yet different people seldom see things with the same eyes, and there fore -some of his few remarks on them may possi bly be new. On other parts, had his time and leisure allowed him to see more, he would have been more diffuse. In all cases he can truly say, he has spoken of things precisely as they ap peared to himself.
