Octavo, 207 pages plus 2 huge maps (each 770 x 1450 mm) in a separate case (the 'Journal'); oblong quarto, [xii] pages plus 107 plates, printed rectos only (the 'Photographs') and octavo, [vi], 133 pages (the 'Confidential Report'). Full leather (the 'Journal', its map case, and the 'Photographs') and cloth (the 'Confidential Report'); a fine set. The deluxe issue of this fine facsimile edition; each volume is one of 50 copies (from a total edition of 400) bound in full leather (with the exception of the Confidential Report, which was issued only in cloth). Each of the three parts were published at different times; these volumes therefore do not carry the same edition number; the journal is number 36, the confidential report is number 39 and the photograph album is number 20. About this Item: Adelaide: C E Bristow Government Printer, 1893. FIRST EDITION, 8vo, pp 208, 2 large folding maps in separate folder with ties, text in new grey paper wrapper, brown pot on title-page otherwise very clean. Only 500 copies of the JOURNAL were printed. It includes Lindsay's final report and journal, the journal of Wells, the surveyor and later second officer and a vocabulary of the Pidong tribe at the head of the Murchison River. Because of the serious drought the expedition was not entirely successful but nevertheless covered 2,700 miles of unexplored territory and mapped 80,000 square miles of unknown country in south western Australia and South Australia. About this Item: C. E. Bristow, Government Printer, Adelaide, 1893. Paperback. Condition: Very good. First edition. The expedition, funded by Sir Thomas Elder and led by David Lindsay, was intended to explore western South Australia and Western Australia, in order '. to fill up the Map of Australia, that purpose will not be fulfilled if any appreciable area anywhere, be omitted.' By the end of the expedition, which included 14 men and 44 camels, 80,000 square miles of land had been charted, but only traces of water and good grazing land were found. The expedition collected 150 new species of insects and 19 new species of plants which were part of the 700 specimens collected; in addition, mollusks, lichens, fungi, birds, mammals, reptiles, rocks & minerals were collected. The Journal includes Lindsay's final report and journal (160pp), the journal of Wells, and vocabularies collected from the "Pidong" tribe. 8vo, 207pp, staplebound, in pale blue paper wraps, front paper cover lacking. With 2 large folding maps in separate pale blue folder. Map folder with sml lib stamp at front cover; two sml surplus Library of Congress stamps internally.
