Item Description: Forgotten Books, United States, 2017. Paperback. Book Condition: New. Language: English . Brand New Book ***** Print on Demand *****. Excerpt from The Journal of William Lockerby: Sandalwood Trader in the Fijian Islands During the Years 1808-1809; With an Introduction and Other Papers Connected With the Earliest European Visitors to the Islands Curran, that it was supposed he had been taken, in Liverpool, by a press-gang - the date of his disappearance being about the middle of the Napoleonic wars and on the eve of the American war of 1812 - 14; and that after a time most of his relations and friends assumed that he was dead, but his wife refused to wear mourning and expected his return. The tradition continued, that Lockerby did return, after several years, and accounted for his absence by saying that he had been marooned in the Fiji Islands, then not an uncommon way of disposing of troublesome pressed men. It was added, probably not by Lockerby himself, that a dusky princess of those parts had there fallen in love with him, had married him, had helped him with her people, and that eventually he had got away quite amicably. The young people of the family knew that Lockerby had written a long account of his experiences in Fiji; but the elder members, under the in?uence of old fashioned prudery, were very Shy of allowing access to this narrative, so that it was not till almost a century after it had been written that Leonard Wharton was allowed even to see the true story of his great grandfather s adventure. Item Description: Kraus Reprint Limited, Nendeln (Liechtenstein), 1967. Hardcover. Book Condition: g+ to vg. Reprint. Quarto. XXVII, [1], 421, [1]pp. Original blue cloth, with gold lettering and blind ruling on spine. Frontispiece. Until the end of the eighteenth century very little was known of the Fijian islands except from the scanty reports of the few seamen who in exploring the uncharted waters of the South Western Pacific had sighted, and even in very rare cases touched at, one or other of the smaller outlying islands. During the first ten or fifteen years of the following century, however, many British and American ships visited one part of the coast of one of the larger Fijian Islands, for the sake of the sandalwood which accidentally had been found to grow there abundantly. This fascinating volume is a transcription of William Lockerby's manuscript. The author was 25 years old when he sailed from his home town in command of the brig "Active" on June 5, 1810. Preceeding by way of the Cape of Good Hope, Bourbon, Tasmania, Sydney, New Zealand and Tonga, he arrived in Fiji where he traded for sandalwood. The first section of the Journal consists of sailing directions followed by an English-Fijian vocabulary. The second section is an account of the various Fijian chiefs with whom Lockerby did business. The additional documents include Samuel Patterson's account of the wreck of the Eliza (1808); the journal of the missionaries from the Hibernia (1809); Captain Richard Siddon's experiences in Fiji in 1809-15; and extracts from periodical publications (1804-15). This volume is complete with its full-page plates and two folded maps at rear. Minor age-toning to spine. Binding in overall good+ to very good, interior in very good condition.
