Tight, bright and clean. Minor wear only to jacket. VERY GOOD INDEED. Jacket VG now in a clear protective sleeve. An important edition. (xlviii), 789 pages. CONTENTS: Preface; Bibliography; Introduction George F. Nuttall; Extracts from William Penn's Preface; The Journal; George Fox's later years Henry J. Cadbury; Thomas Ellwood's Conclusion; Index. SUMMARY: George Fox, the founder of Quakerism, was born in 1642 at a time of great political turmoil when unorthodox religious ideas were met with intolerance and brutality. Rejecting his puritan background, Fox toured England, Europe and America, as a dissenting preacher. His unusual and uncompromising views led to frequent clashes with the church and the courts. Persecuted, beaten and frequently imprisoned for blasphemy, Fox was fearless in questioning the need for clergy and emphasising the accessibility of God to all. Compiled by John Nickalls from accounts dictated by Fox himself, this 1952 edition is an intimate depiction of the life and trials of a radical religious reformer who conquered depression, doubt and physical infirmity to advance the Quaker movement. It is an inspiring portrayal of the foundation and early struggles of the Religious Society of Friends and a personal account of the turbulent social and religious climate of the period. **Will be well-packed for posting/shipping**. 8vo. About this Item: Printed by W.Richardson and S. Clark and Sold by Luke Hinde, London: 1765, 1765. Full Leather. Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 3rd Edition. pp. lix, 679, (xxviii). Folio. Engraved bookplate of: John Glaisyer, Chymist & Druggist, Brighton" Engraved armorial bookplate of Francis Frederick Fox Contemporary full leather binding, joints cracked. A nice copy of an important and scarce Quaker work. George Fox (1624-1691), was the founder of the Society of Friends (Quakers). By nature serious and contemplative, at the age of 19 he entered upon a wandering quest for spiritual enlightenment. In 1646 he underwent a mystical experience that convinced him that Christianity was not an outward profession but an inner light by which Christ directly illumines the believing soul. Revelation was for Fox not confined to the Scriptures. In 1647 he began to preach. Although often the victim of mob brutality and eight times imprisoned between 1649 and 1675, Fox won many followers, especially among groups of separatists. In 1668 he prepared the first pattern of organization, which was for some years to serve as the discipline of the Society of Friends. The London Yearly Meeting was started in 1671. To confirm his followers in their beliefs and to spread the truths, Fox went in 1671 to the West Indies and to America, where he made arduous journeys to various colonies scattered between New England and North Carolina. Later he twice visited Holland. His sincerity, serenity, fearlessness, and powerful preaching are attested to by a number of his contemporaries. This Journal, with a preface by William Penn, was first published in 1694. An early owner od this book was Francis Frederick Fox (1832-1915) the 2nd son of Francis Ker Fox of Brislington House. He was an oil and colour merchant, President of the Grateful Society in 1869. Sadly, his wife Alice died in childbirth in 1870 and he was left a widower with six children. He was Master of the Society of Merchant Venturers in 1878 & 79 and Sheriff in 1894. He was a J.P. for Bristol and for Gloucestershire and an Alderman for the city from 1865. He wrote extensively on local history. Perhaps he was a descendant of the great Quaker George Fox. Smith p. 690; Sabin 25352. **PRICE JUST REDUCED! PA62. Seller Inventory # 026R17

A Journal or Historical Account of the: FOX, GEORGE

About this Item: London, Printed for Thomas Northcott, in George-Yard, in Lombard-Street. MDCXCIV. [1694]., 1694. Hardcover. Condition: Fair. No Jacket. 1st Edition. George Fox(1624-1691) founder of the Society of Friends. "Born in Leicestershire and apprenticed to a shoemaker, he apparently had no formal schooling. In 1643 he parted fromfamily and friends and traveled in search of enlightenment. After long painful struggles he came in 1646 to rely on the `Inner Light of the Living Christ.' He forsook church attendance, dismissed contemporary religious controversies as trivial, and in 1647 began to preach that truth is to be found in God's voice speaking to the soul- -hence, `Friends of Truth' later abbreviated to `Friends.' In 1649 he was jailed for interrupting a Nottingham church service with an impassioned appeal from the Scriptures to the Holy Spirit as the authority and guide. In 1650 at Derby he was imprisoned as a blasphemer, and there a judge nicknamed the `Quakers,' after Fox had exhorted the magistrates to 'tremble at the word of the Lord.' .Fox spent six years in different prisons, sometimes under terrible conditions. He campaigned against the latter and against other social evils. His famous journal was published posthumously in 1694."--Douglas: The New Int'l Dict. of the Christian Church, pp.383- 384. We offer the 1694 First Edition of his Journal, indispensable for the study of his life and the early days of the Quakers. Provenance, the following two inscriptions written on leaf A1 and bottom of p.632. 3rd inscription on leaf A1 only. About this Item: Thomas Northcott, London, 1694. Full calf. Condition: Good. First Edition. The Lord, the 13th and the Eleventh Month, 1690, the First Volume. [50], xviii, 632 & [16] pages bound in plain contemporary - or near contemporary - full calf which is rubbed. No further volumes were published. The Journal itself is preceded by "The Preface being a Summary Account of the Divers Dispensations of God" (48 pages) by William Penn; pages i-ix "The Testament of Margaret Fox Concerning Her Late Husband George Fox"; pages x-xvii other testimonies. The Journal begins as page 1 and continues to page 287 when on the verso od Pp2 the pagination resumes at page 188 and continues to page 632, with the text continuing through the break in the pagination. The collation moves from Pp2 to Aaa without a break in the text. page 399 is misnumbered as page 309. The doubling of pages 189-286 is recognised in the heading to the First Table or index. Following the Journal come 16 un-numbered pages of four Tables or indexes. Aproximately 20 pages have had blank areas - margins etc - strengthened by paper "patches" - not prfessionally done but seeming to work perfectly well. Approximately 55 pages have contemporary marginal comments, sometimes a few words, sometimes a short paragraph. Unfortunately the comments have been intriguingly scored through. Where the scoring has been neglected, or where the original can be recovered, it is revealef the comments are of a theological nature. On page 309 the words "from Christ" in the text "this Justice [in Christ] Clark fell distracted" has been attempted to be blanked out by the original commentator. There is no half-title and nothing beyond the Fourth Table, though this comes to a logical conclusion and doesn't suggest that any text is missing. The final page of text - single leaf Gggggg - has been crumpled and water-stained and some letters are lacking over 2" at the outer margin of the text. on the endpaper the name of the annotator (and first owner?) has been scribbled through, though the words "her book" can be made out. The next owner's name to appear - C18th - is Sarah Marriott, then "Charles Elcock / 5 iv 1876 then Marion B Gibbins - C20th. Faults noted apart, this is a good well-printed copy with wide margins and possibly an intriguing provenance. The contemporary calf binding is chipped at the head and tail of the spine and is generally rubbed, but it is holding together very well. A heavy and valuable book, so additional shipping and insurance will be asked for. Size: 8" x 12" (210mm x300mm). Seller Inventory # 020438
