Item Description: Henry L. Shepard, 1874. Hardcover. Book Condition: Very Good. 2nd Edition. Henry L. Shepard & Co, Boston, 1874. Cloth. Book Condition: Very Good. [ Edouard ] Riou (illustrator). Second American Edition. [ Edouard ] Riou. Second American Edition. vi, [1], [1 blank], 9-294 pages. Handsome original red pictorial binding showing "the explorers aboard their raft in the volcano" on the front cover. Cloth. Second American edition of Verne's second book. The first edition of this work was published serially by Frank Leslie. The first American edition in book form was published by Scribner, Armstrong in Nov 8, 1873 based on the English translation by Griffith and Farran. The example offered here, was published by Henry L. Shepard & Co as a cheap edition, and announced in the July 1, 1874 issue of American Booksellers Guide, Shepard intended this edition to compete with the Scribner Armstrong edition of 1873. Other than the binding, which is quite nice, the production values show a less detailed eye - offsetting from other sheets, broken type in places, etc. Taves and Michaluk (V002) note the Scribner Armstrong edition contains 52 full page woodcut illustrations by Riou. This copy by Shepard has 2 figures with lanterns on the spine, and the 15 called for illustrations, with one further (Prof von Hardwigg) plus the vignette on the title page. Scribner responded to Shepard's challenge with a popular edition in plain cloth later in 1874 with 20 illustrations of their own. A nice early edition of this Verne classic not often found in the marketplace. Taves & Michaluk V002. Very good condition. Housed in a custom-made collector's slipcase. A Journey to the Centre of the: Verne, Jules

Item Description: Scribner, Armstrong & Co, New York, 1874. Book Condition: Very good. This "scientific romance" marks the beginning of science fiction as a genre. Jules Verne was inspired by Charles Lyell's Geological Evidences of the Antiquity of Man (1863), and the trend away from a literal biblical account of the history of the Earth. "Science, my lad, is made up of mistakes, but they are mistakes which it is useful to make, because they lead little by little to the truth". This is the deluxe edition, sold by subscription only, printed on heavier paper, with a superb gilt decorated pictorial binding, amongst THE SCARCEST AND MOST DESIRABLE of editions, with the terra cotta cloth and beveled edge binding. Published with 52 illustrations by Edouard Riou. 8vo, frontispiece, 413pp, ads (6pp ads undated), all edges gilt. Gilt and black stamped pictorial covers, with gilt scene of men on raft at front cover, gilt illustration of men in crystal cave, and "Scribner, Armstrong & Co." at lower spine [first state (with "Scribner, Armstrong & Co." at the spine foot, rather than the later "Scribners"]. Some light thumbing evident at margins of some pages. Spine expertly rebacked with the original cloth blending in seamlessly. Overall, a very good copy. The 1st edition was published in French in 1864 'Voyage au Centre de la Terre'; the 1st English edition appeared in 1872; Scribner Armstrong's 1st US edition came out in November 1873, though dated 1874; and late in 1874 Scribner Armstrong published this deluxe edition. Deluxe edition, sold by subscription only. Bookseller Inventory # 15543
