First Edition, Second Issue. 8vo, period tree calf spine & cornerns and marbled boards, morocco spine label, [4], 384 pp. Covers detached, extremities worn, a few pages are attached to detached covers, some foxing, but text is very clean. This is the second issue, which is sometimes called the second edition, distinguished by the 6 line errata slip folowing the title page, compared to the 12 line slip in the first issue. Samuel Johnson (1709-1784) was an author who made lasting contributions to English literature, as a poet, novelist, literary critic and lexicographer. He began as a writer for Gentleman's Magazine, but is known for works like The Life of Richard Savage, The Vanity of Human Wishes, and Johnson's Dictionary of the English Language (published in 1755). Around 1763, he befriended James Boswell, who would become his traveling companion to Scotland. After leaving Edinburgh in August 1773, they would visit and comment on a variety of places, including Inch Keith, St. Andrews, Aberbrothick, Monotrose, and Elgin.

[ii], 384, [2, errata] pp. 8vo. Second edition, first issue, with 6-line errata and U4 corrected (as opposed to first edition) and the first two preliminary leaves on laid paper (as opposed to second edition, second issue, on wove). [ii], 384, [2, errata] pp. 8vo. "I had desired to visit the Hebrides . and was . induced to undertake the journey, by finding in Mr. Boswell a companion ." Though Johnson's name does not appear on the title-page, the opening sentence left no doubt in the minds of his earliest readers who the author was. This edition is frequently referred to as the first edition, second issue; but it was largely reset, and incorporates Johnson's final revisions. The errata leaf in this copy is bound in at the rear. Fleeman 75.1J/2a (citing Todd, "The Printing of Johnson's Journey", SB vi 1954, 247-54) Contemporary calf, rebacked to style preserving red morocco spine label. Foxing to first and last few leaves, small closed tear to lower margin of B1, a very good copy, with two engraved armorial bookplates Second edition, first issue, with 6-line errata and U4 corrected (as opposed to first edition) and the first two preliminary leaves on laid paper (as opposed to second edition, second issue, on wove).

Contemporary calf, expertly rebacked, not recently, gilt panelled spine, red morocco label; corners repaired, small area of insect damage to surface leather on upper board. ESTC T84319. First edition, first issue with the twelve-line errata, leaves D8 & U4 cancels, and with uncorrected page number on p.296 (*U4v). Before printing of the volume was complete, Johnson made alterations to two passages in the book, which necessitated the cancellation of leaves D8 and U4. The verso of the latter was misnumbered 226 for 296, and copies are found with this numbering in corrected and uncorrected state. The titlepage, 12 line errata-leaf, and the two cancel leaves were printed together as a half-sheet, and consequently the book has no half title.
