Limited edition of 185 this being number 15 and signed by the author. first separate edition of this critical work on Thomas Hardy's Jude the Obscure, one of only 185 copies signed by H. Havelock Ellis.Originally published in 1896 in the Savoy, this essay concerns Thomas Hardy's controversial and critically reviled Jude the Obscure. Unlike his contemporaries, Ellis proclaimed Hardy's novel to be "the greatest novel written in England for many years." In addition to his work as a critic, Ellis was also a sexologist, physician, and social reformer and brought his expertise in those fields to his work as a critic. Accordingly, this work is also notable for its modern style and serves as a landmark in the field of literary criticism. This edition also includes Hardy's note in response to Ellis' criticism.Book is very good+ and bright. Light marking to card boards. Light edge running. Contents good. From the Introduction "No one but a genius could have written Jude. Its very imperfections are more arresting than the felicities of lesser novelists. He has set an unmistakable seal on it (the novel), and it is to be hoped that his vision will continue to animate it and be an inspiration to those who loved the England that Hardy loved." Item Description: London: Macmillan and Co., Limited, 1919-20, 1919. 37 volumes, octavo. Recent dark blue morocco, spines gilt in compartments, marbled endpapers, single line rules to boards and top edges gilt, others untrimmed. An excellent set with some occasional light foxing. With etched frontispiece portrait by William Strang in Volume I; 'Map of the Wessex of the Novels and Poems' in Volume II. The Mellstock Edition, a deluxe edition limited to 500 copies signed by the author on a preliminary leaf in Volume 1. Initially discussed as early as July 1914, the start of World War I halted production and the actual publication did not begin until December 1919. The edition name is a reference to the mythical "Mellstock" of Hardy's fiction, a combination of the tiny Dorset hamlet Stinsford with the Higher and Lower Bockhamptons. At Stinsford his grandfather was a founder of the church "quire," the group of musicians who played for services; the churchyard contains the remains of both Hardy's wives, Emma Gifford Hardy and Florence Dugdale Hardy, as well as Hardy's heart, the rest of his body having been interred in the Poets' Corner at Westminster Abbey. A very handsomely bound set. Purdy, pp. 287-288. Bookseller Inventory # 68715
