Destination, Rates & Speeds

About this Item: Chautauqua Press, Phillips & Hunt, New York, 1888. Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. True First Edition (SD). You'll find a number of sellers asserting that their copy published in 1889 is a First Edition. Maybe I'm missing something, but my copy has 1888 on the copyright page and 1888 on the title page. Rather remarkably, the condition of my copy would be more fitting if the book were published in 1988 than 1888. Take a look at the photographs, the covers are very clean (there are just a few very light spots on the rear), the gilt lettering on the spine is still quite bright, and there really isn't any wear to speak of, not on the corners and not on the edges, not anywhere. I'm not promising perfection. After all, 1988 was not so recently either. The interior of the book is of the same quality as the exterior. There are very light green inside covers and end papers that are in very good shape. This book is square, tight, and very solidly bound with absolutely no issues in that regard. And the pages are very clean, you will only find an occasional speck-sized spot. Finally, no one has written their name or anything else anywhere in the book, and there aren't any markings or attachments. If you have an interest in this title you really can't ask for much more by way of condition. And it's the True First Edition. 'John Charles Van Dyke (1861-1931) was an American art historian and critic. He was born at New Brunswick, New Jersey, studied at Columbia, and for many years in Europe. In 1878, Van Dyke was appointed the librarian of the Gardner Sage Library at the New Brunswick Theological Seminary, and in 1891 as a professor of art history at Rutgers College (now Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey).'.
