Item Description: The University of Chicago Press, United States, 2009. Paperback. Book Condition: New. Reprint. Language: English . Brand New Book. You probably haven t ever noticed them. But they ve noticed you. They notice everything. That s their job. Sitting quietly in a nondescript car outside a bank making note of the tellers work habits, the positions of the security guards. Lagging a few car lengths behind the Brink s truck on its daily rounds. Surreptitiously jiggling the handle of an unmarked service door at the racetrack. They re thieves. Heisters, to be precise. They re pros, and Parker is far and away the best of them. If you re planning a job, you want him in. Tough, smart, hardworking, and relentlessly focused on his trade, he is the heister s heister, the robber s robber, the heavy s heavy. You don t want to cross him, and you don t want to get in his way, because he ll stop at nothing to get what he s after. Parker, the ruthless antihero of Richard Stark s mystery novels, is one of the most unforgettable characters in hardboiled noir. Lauded by critics for his taut realism, unapologetic amorality, and razor-sharp prose style - and adored by fans who turn each intoxicating page with increasing urgency - Stark is a master of crime writing, his books as influential as any in the genre. The University of Chicago Press has embarked on a project to return the early volumes of this series to print for a new generation of readers to discover - and become addicted to. This season s offerings include volumes 4-6 in the series: The Mourner , The Score , and The Jugger . In The Jugger , Parker travels to Nebraska to help out a geriatric safecracker who knows too many of his criminal secrets. By the time he arrives, the safecracker is dead and Parker s skeletons are on the verge of escaping from their closet - unless Parker resorts to lethal measures. Item Description: Avon, 1985. Soft cover. Book Condition: Very Good. There are some creases along the front cover at the spine and the spine has a few creases as well. Donald E. Westlake writing as Richard Stark, created Parker the thief in 1962. We are never given Parker's first name (in contrast to Block¿s Keller who turns out to be John) and there are some hints that "Parker" might be an alias. Parker uses a number of aliases of which Charles Willis is the most frequent (until he has to give it up (and the bank accounts that go with it) when police show up at his hotel [The Jugger]. At times he also uses Edward Latham and if someone asks him his name he often says ¿Ed¿. Parker is no Raffles, or even the Saint, but a ruthless, methodical hoodlum who does whatever it takes to pull off the job. To say that he is focused is an understatement. While working, nothing distracts him (he will not have sex while planning or carrying out a job, but afterwards is insatiable) and his (temporary) partners better perform. He is emotionless, has no sense of humor and rarely engages in small talk, and then only when the situation forces him to. His one ethical principle is that he will not double-cross someone with whom he is working, unless that individual tries to double-cross Parker. Then Parker will unhesitatingly take revenge. He is not a killer in the sense of being a hit man, but will kill if necessary. When Parker has handcuffed two security guards and returns to his amateur partner Tom Lindahl [Ask the Parrot], Lindahl says ¿If you killed Bill, you¿ll kill me, too.¿ Parker responds, ¿Tom, you don¿t kill someone unless you have to. It puts the law on you like nothing else.¿ Despite his character deficiencies Parker shows occasional flashes of humanity. Bookseller Inventory # 001289
