Fifth edition (as stated upon title page). i-viii, 9-410, [8] pages. Hardcover: H 22.25cm x L 14cm. Contemporary full calf leather binding but with spine leather perished leaving quires exposed lengthwise; front and rear boards very tenuously attached with some surface peeling to leather and worn edges. Toning and foxing throughout. Text block binding remains firm. Sold as is and needs to be re-backed if not re-cased. Preface (pages iii-v) and brief intro (pages vii-viii) in English; majority of interior text in Latin with opening arguments (i.e. commentaries) and footnotes in English and some scattered Greek. With four b/w foldouts as called for by OCLC - map "Gallia Vetus" between pages viii-9, bridge construction plate between pages 68-69, map "Italiae Antiquae" between pages 192-193, map "Cinspectus Locorum Belli Africani" between pages 328-329 - and an unpaged Index at rear. Item Description: Philadelphia [PA]: Uriah Hunt, M'Carty & Davis, John Grigg, and Thomas Desilver, Jr., 1831., 1831. Primary text in Latin with notes in English. Seventh edition (as stated upon title page). Paged as i-viii, [foldout map], 9-76, [foldout plate], 77-192, [foldout map], 193-328, [foldout map], 329-410, [6]. Hardcover: H 22.25cm x L 14cm. Original full leather binding; boards rubbed with corners bumped and well worn, scuffing along edges, old glue repair evident at spine head apparently done to keep top 2.5cm of surface leather adhered to spine's backstrip, slender leather loss at heads of both joints, spine decorated with thin gilt horizontal bars and retains its original dark maroon title label with still reasonably bright gilt lettering. Moisture staining upon top edge and top 6.5cm of fore-edge; associated mild to occasionally strong moisture stains at top corners of most interior leaves; some foxing and toning to interior leaves as well. Old ink inscription and price on front pastedown with stub of old bookplate and remnants underlying old orange wax(?) adhesive; same orange residue on rear pastedown. Missing front free endpaper, front flyleaf, and rear free endpaper. First free leaf present is title page which has old ink signature at top corner and several antiquarian ink math calculations in right and left margins; old signature also at top corner of page 9. Four fold-out plates have toning and foxing as well; first map has particularly aforementioned strong moisture staining along top margin with some short penetration into the image; foldout plate has 5cm closed tear at its right bottom fold and very short closed tear near center of fore-edge margin. Binding remains firm. Contents are as follows: "C. JULII CAESARIS COMMENTARIORUM DE BELLO GALLICO" (pages 10-187); "C. JULII CAESARIS COMMENTARIORUM DE BELLO CIVILI LIBER PRIMUS" (pages 189-293); "A. HIRTII COMMENTARIORUM DE BELLO ALEXANDRINO LIBER" (pages 295-326); "A. HIRTII COMMENTARIORUM DE BELLO AFRICANO LIBER UNUS" (pages 327-365); "A. HIRTII COMMENTARIORUM DE BELLO HISPANIENSI LIBER" (pages 367-390); C. JULII CAESARIS FRAGMENTA (pages 391-410); six page Index. Authorship attributed to Julius Caesar (100-44 BC) and Aulus Hirtius (ca. 80-43 B.C.) with Jean Godouin (1620-1700) as editor and Thomas Clark (1787-1860) as translator.
