Item Description: Century, New York, 1899. Later printing. Later printing. With decorations by J. Lockwood Kipling. 324 pp. Printed by the DeVinne Press. 1 vols. 8vo. Inscribed to Frank Doubleday's Son, With a Poem. Inscribed on the title-page from Kipling to Felix Doty, the son of his close friend and American publisher, Frank N. Doubleday, "Jack Doty, from the Author: Mar 28: 99: Rudyard Kipling." With a holograph four-line quotation on the facing page from the "Law of the Jungle," "Wash daily from nose tip to tail tip - / drink deeply but never too deep. / And remember the night is for hunting & / forget not the day is for sleep, / R.K."Frank N. Doubleday, or "Effendi" - the nickname given him by Kipling, founded Doubleday & McClure Company in 1897, partly on the author's advice. Kipling was close to his American publisher and his family - it was Frank Doubleday's son Nelson who asked Kipling to write a book of animal stories, published as Just So Stories in 1902. The "Jack" Doty of this inscription is undoubtedly Felix Doty (1887-1941), a Louisiana boy adopted by Doubleday. Richards A84 (for first American edition) Publisher's green cloth, stamped in black with elephant on front cover and lion on rear cover. Near fine With decorations by J. Lockwood Kipling. 324 pp. Printed by the DeVinne Press. 1 vols. 8vo. Bookseller Inventory # 267989

Item Description: Macmillan, London, 1895. Hardcover. Book Condition: Very Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. John Lockwood Kipling, C.I.E. (illustrator). First U.K. Edition, First Printing. Blue cloth with title and decorations stamped in gilt onto upper board and spine, 12mo (7-1/4 inches tall), all edges gilt, colored endpapers, illustrated throughout with jungle theme line drawings. Volume with spine ends softened and a tiny bump to the foot of the lower board near spine, contemporary gift inscription in ink "Jack. ." at head of the contents page, two small ink dots near top edge of title page. Gilt is bright and text is clean, lacking the foxing commonly found. DJ is worn and soiled with tears and chipping, especially at spine ends and top edge, some splatters to upper spine panel and multiple small tape repairs verso. The front panel has "Jack" written in a juvenile hand multiple times in pencil and is partially erased. An interesting coincidence that Kipling's son was John "Jack" Kipling. The bookmark has minor creases and fading to the head, else fine. An intact and robust survivor of one of Kipling's most enduring works, destined to be "King of the Jungle" in any early jacket or Kipling collection. ". .There are thousands that do write; there are dozens that can write; but there is only one Rudyard Kipling." Rudyard Kipling - An Attempt at Appreciation, Monkshood, G. F. (pseud. W. J. Clarke), 1899. The 1895 Macmillan edition of The Second Jungle Book is a relative rarity when found complete in it's original 19th century dust jacket. It was the first illustrated Kipling UK dust jacket issued and is found in only a handful of institutions. Auction house records document the presence of a jacket (in various states of completeness - 1964, '73, '92 & '97) just four times. This jacketed copy also has the publishers circular "PRESENTATION COPY" blind stamp on the title page and was thus reserved for a patron, friend or colleague. Found within, is the publishers bookmark, with the printed date of "10.9.95" at it's foot. Macmillans own records, held in the British Library, show "12 November 1895" (Richards, A85) as the official publication date of the first UK edition of The Second Jungle Book - following by just three days the publication of The Century Co.'s first US edition. The bookmark has "Works by Rudyard Kipling" printed at it's head, and shows The Second Jungle Book as being available prior to either of the known US or UK publication dates, at a price of "6s". Cutler & Styles, in "Modern British Authors: Their First Editions" (1930) show the London edition of The Second Jungle Book as being the first, rather than the US edition. The bookmark is an unusual and evocative piece of advertising ephemera, showing an earlier selection of works by Rudyard Kipling, the winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1907. Ref. Richards, A85; Cutler & Styles p. 81. Bookseller Inventory # 1355

Item Description: The Century Co., New York, 1894. Cloth. Book Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. First Edition. Small 8vo 7½" - 8" tall. Publisher's olive-green criss-cross patterned cloth, gilt decoration on upper and lower boards, decoration and titles on spine, top edges gilt, in the publisher's illustrated jacket printed in olive green; with numerous plates and illustrations in text, throughout, plus b/w frontispiece. Book is near fine, with a spot of soiling to the upper board, a scrape to the top-edge gilt, and scattered foxing to the page edges; the jacket is heavily chipped at the spine tips, more lightly at the extremities, and age toned, especially at the spine. Housed in a green-cloth clamshell case with leather/gilt spine label; The first American edition, published the same day as the first English, but with substantial differences (see Richards A76). Kipling himself much preferred the American binding to the British, saying it beat the English version "to little pieces." Although it appears the British edition was likely issued with a plain glassine dust jacket, the bibliographies have no record of this illustrated wrapper issued by The Century Co. Richards A77, Livingston 105; xvii, [3], 303 pages. Bookseller Inventory # 27021

Item Description: Macmillan 1894-95, London, 1894. First editions of both volumes in The Jungle Book. Octavo, two volumes, original blue cloth decorated and lettered in gilt, all edges gilt. In near fine condition with a touch of rubbing, contemporary bookplate to the The Jungle Book. Illustrated by J. L. Kipling, W.H. Drake and P. Frenzeny. Housed in a custom clamshell box. A very bright set. The Jungle Book is a collection of fables which provide moral instruction by using animals anthropomorphically. Each story begins and ends with a verse, and the original publications contain some illustrations that were done by Rudyard's father John Lockwood Kipling. The inspiration for the book is evident. Kipling was born in India, and he spent his childhood there. Interestingly, Kipling wrote these stories when he lived in Vermont. Bookseller Inventory # 27010

Item Description: Macmillan, London, 1894. Hard Cover. First Edition. The Jungle Book (Macmillan 1894) [together with] The Second Jungle Book (Macmillan 1895). A lovely First UK Edition set of The "Jungle Books". Each volume in the publisher's original dark navy blue cloth decoratively ruled and pictorially stamped in gilt on the front cover and spine and lettered in gilt on the spine. All edges gilt. Original dark grey-green end-papers. Each volume is in lovely, collectable VG++ condition. Both volumes have very slight pushing at the spine tips and contemporary gift inscriptions and both are foxed in places to the text. Notwithstanding these faults the boards of both books are clean and bright, the hinges (so often weak) are firm and there is only a touch of rubbing to the extremities. The nicest set that we have handled. One of the most important sets of children's books ever written and uncommon in nice condition. Bookseller Inventory # 355490710950

Item Description: Macmillan and Co., London, 1894. Hardcover. John Lockwood Kipling (illustrator). First edition. This is a compelling set of British first editions of perhaps Kipling’s most famous works – the first and second Jungle Books. These copies were previously owned by Churchill’s friends and publishers, Frank and Nelson Doubleday, and apparently used by Nelson to prepare Doubleday’s 1946 editions. Ironically, Kipling’s quintessential tales of India were conceived in Vermont, where Kipling and his father, John Lockwood Kipling (1837-1911) "worked together in the closest harmony as the two sat smoking their pipes and plotting out fresh stories together." (Allen, Kipling Sahib, p.328) Here Mowgli was born, the infant found by Father Wolf, saved from Shere Khan, and tutored in the Laws of the Jungle by Bagheera the panther and Baloo the bear. "The pen took charge, and I watched it begin to write stories about Mowgli and the animals, which later grew into the Jungle Books." Kipling had left India for the last time in 1891, but "With his father’s guidance he learned to ‘undo what the North has done’ and so let back in all ‘the sights and the sounds and smells / That ran with our youth in the eye of the Sun’ – the flotsam and jetsam of twelve years of Indian living – just long enough to create the celebration of childhood that is The Jungle Book " (Allen, Kipling Sahib, p. 364) The Jungle Book was published in 1894, seven stories and seven poems with eight of the illustrations by the author’s father. The Second Jungle Book was published in 1895, eight stories and eight poems, this time with thirty-seven illustrations by the author’s father. Both first editions are bound in matching blue cloth, strikingly illustrated and printed in gilt on the spines and front covers, the contents with dark bluish green endpapers, illustration plates, and all edges trimmed and gilt. The Jungle Book is first printing, with "R. & R. Clark" as printer on p. 212 (as opposed to ‘R. & R. Clark Ltd.’). First English edition of The Second Jungle Book is confirmed by 238 pages of text, ‘The King’s Ankus’ stopping abruptly at line 8, p139, with 515 words missing. (Richards, A76, p.80 and A85, p.87) These copies came to us from the library of Nelson Doubleday Jr. (1933-2015), son of Nelson Doubleday (1889-1949), and grandson of Frank Nelson Doubleday (1862-1934), Kipling’s friend and U.S. publisher and founder of the Doubleday publishing empire. F.N. Doubleday met Kipling while working for Charles Scribners Sons. They struck an intimate, lifelong friendship. Kipling nicknamed Doubleday "Effendi", a play on his initials - F.N.D. Frank's son Nelson was president of the firm from 1922 to 1946, as was Nelson Jr., from 1978 to 1983. Each of these first edition volumes bears a small, printed slip of paper on the title page with new publisher information reading, in three lines, "Doubleday & Company, Inc. | Garden City New York | 1946". The slips were pasted over the original publication information (though both have since come loose). Doubleday & Company published an edition of these books in 1946, the last year of Nelson's presidency. The title page of the 1946 edition matches those of these British first editions with the pasted-on slips, making it likely to the point of certainty that these particular volumes were used as mockups by Nelson Doubleday. Condition is very good minus. The bindings are square and tight with some fraying to spine ends and dulling of spine gilt. The contents remain crisp and complete and the books feel unread. We note all illustrations present, bright page edge gilt, light intermittent spotting (barely noticeable in The Jungle Book), and cosmetic cracking to the endpapers at the gutters that does not impact binding integrity. Additional 1946 edition mock-up notations include title in pencil on The Jungle Book frontispiece recto, pencil strikethrough of "All rights reserved" on both title pages, and brief pencil notation to the upper left front free endpaper verso. Bibliographic reference: Richards A76 & A85. Bookseller Inventory # 004253
