Item Description: G P Putnam's Sons, New York, 1930. Hard Cover. Book Condition: NF. No Jacket. Colour Art Plates, Photos, Drawings, Maps, plan (illustrator). 1st. This impressive volume is a comprehensivel and detailed record of the Field Museum of Natural History Crane Pacific Expedition which largely followed the course of Charles Darwin's historic Beagle voyage and of his contemporary A R Wallace's expeditions to the East Indies, New Guinea and the Philippines. The Crane expedition ship set out from Boston late in 1928, to return there in October 1929. after exactly 11 months, having sailed 32,000 nautical miles carrying out scientific, anthropological, botanical, wild life and marine life studies, in those locations plus the Caribbean, South Pacific and Melanesia. More than 18,000 specimens were collected, including a number new to zoologists. Accounts of the scientific and exploration work are complemented by observations of the different native races encountered as well as the seafaring adventures experienced aboard the Illyria and by those ashore in often primative environments. Although Illyria is described as a yacht she was a craft of 356 gross tons, 147 feet long and hoisting up to 10,000 square feet of sail in a rig consisting four square sails (brigantine rig) on the fore mast and fore and aft sails on the after mast. There was 300hp diesel auxiliary deisel motor for when the wind failed or emergencies. There were six scientists and three friends of the expedition leader, Cornelius Crane, aboard plus the skipper and 18 crew. The author was one of the "friends" and the book is based on his diary record of the expedition and provides an engrossing and informative story. After the New Guinea section of the expedition most of the Crane party left the yacht to informally explore different parts of South East Asia, China and Japan, also arriving back in the US by trans-Pacific steamer 11 months after the Illyria sailed on the expedition. Published by G P Puntam's Sons, New York, stated first edition 1930, 298 pages including an essay on Pacific Islands zoogeography, summary of expedition collections and index. Illustrated with eight full page colour natural history art paintings by Walter A Weber including frontis, fullpage b/w photos throughout (mainly taken by author), numerous b/w sketches as chapter heads and tails, two double page maps, double page profile of Illyria showing sail plan and internal arrangements, photo end-papers and photo sub-titlde page, 90 illustrations in total. Blue hard covers are VG+ with gilt front titles and decoration, gilt spine titles lightly faded, red ink former owner name (Arthur T Spoon???) top edge front pastedown, no other impediments and text block is NF. This large and heavy boolk (just over 1.6kg unpacked) would require additional postage for international delivery. Size: 27cm By 20cm. Bookseller Inventory # 005082
